Hi All,

I have created a set of files to create the correct driver set for the 1965 Cape South Easter Trophy at Killarney, South Africa. They are in the attached .zip file. Simply paste them into the top level of your main GPL folder - but make sure to take a back-up copy of your original driv65.ini file first, or you will loose the driver set for the rest of the 1965 season.

I have adjusted the speed of each AI driver, and get lap times that are approximately historically correct. It is not too hard to beat the AI like this, even I managed it. I suppose in real life they were driving local specials or older cars and not the latest works cars used by human players. If necessary adjust the hype value for each driver (in the .ini file) upwards until you get what you want.

This is my first attempt at any sort of Mod for GPL so please go easy if I have screwed anything up. Feedback is welcome.

If anyone could tell me how to move the starter so it is actually possible to see him from anywhere other than 2nd on the grid I would appreciate it.

Jonny

Yes, thank you Jonny for your work in bringing to us some more "History through GPL".  It is wonderful to have another contributor to our love of historic racing!  :)

Will D/L and drive soon.

Hi Jonny ! I have downloaded the set and get a field of ai with correct driver names but without mip files I guess the
cars will have no numbers. It should be possible to do, but will take some work and editing that maybe some of
the guru's here like TvO can offer advice. Thanks for the added carset .

BTW - This topic is kind of lost in this forum, maybe it should be moved to the 65 Mod forum ?

I'm sorry Dave, sorting out mip files is beyond me. Doesn't the game create the car number from that given in the driver ini text file, or is that just used for standings and results and not for graphics?

No, whatever the carnumber/driver lastname in the driver.ini file is will force GPL to look for an ai 3do file which has the pointers for the used mips.
E.g. Clark with number 5 will need an ai 3do file called cla5a.3do (so first 3 characters lastname + carnumber+"a.3do")

The ai 3do file can be made by using a copy of the base ai 3do file which is normally called first 3 letters of carfolder +d.3do.
E.g. The lotus will have a lotd.3do file which you can copy and then change with a hexeditor or racecon (the latter would be the best choice since it can't mess up the file and has a gui) the alternative is to make a copy of an ai 3do and change that (although the catch might be that you will need to check the used mips on correctness for your driver)

For a more detailed explanation have a look at the gpl++ website.

Thanks for the information MECH. I downloaded Racecon and had a look at it but messing around at that sort of level seems to be a small return for a steep learning curve. I find it hard enough to get the time to drive GPL at the moment. Thanks anyway, another thing learned.

Ola Jonny A
I was inspired by what you had done to make a small South African carset, I took the cars in the Tasman 64 and 65 carsets and I added Charlton.
This allows for some races in Africa.
Kyalami, Killarney, Ibla, Lourenço Marques, Roy Hesketh ...

just put the new driv65.ini in the folder of the tracks and SA1965 in cars
then choose the SA1965 carset with GEM
