Well,
it's finished and available to all of us here: http://msdn.microsof...r/jj554510.aspx
Not sure if a simple Microsoft account is all you need to download the 90 days version. And be cautious because this version can't be updated to a full version!

I did some stuff in a virtualized machine and here are my comments about it.

First, I can understand why they wanted to have an OS which is usable by smart phones, tablets, PCs and a mixture of all of them. That's not a bad idea.
But my clients and customers mostly use traditional applications like MS Office and CAD and other stuff and this stuff is build for a normal PC with desktop and mouse and keyboard. Personally I don't see how this will be changed in the next years. Maybe it's a test to see real feedback for Microsoft and use the real feedback to build the next version which they already started to build, I'm sure.

OK, enough :)
I would like to have an option to start a windows 7/8 desktop after login.
For me a better "app" for Windows updates and settings would be fine.
A "search" field inside the windows 7/8 desktop and not only the hotkey search.
For those who love the windows 7 desktop a program starter for those applications like in Windows 7.

I'm sure more to come but for sure interesting at the moment.

I've been using Win8 Release Preview 1.5 months on my main PC. No complaints, it seems slightly better than Win7 in my use but can't really find any dramatic changes (except the Modern UI search screen and much faster booting). The Modern UI is mainly useless on a normal PC but there's hardly ever any need to use it. Search is done in Modern UI but my main use of search is starting apps. That happens in the same way as in Win7: press Win-key, type a few letters and press Enter. Some minor UI improvements include a "power user" menu: pressing Win+x brings up a menu of the most used admin tools, any of which can be launched by pressing another key. Very quick and convenient.

Michael, I read it and I assume, not know this, that we can use Windows 8 in two different ways. You can sync it like it's possible in the Mac world. This would need you to use the Modern UI however. If you use the modern world programs, called apps, which are downloaded from a store, Microsoft, Apple and Google already know that because you need an account to be able to download apps, even the free ones most of the time.
Most of the time, windows 8 independant, I refuse to install those so called apps because most want to have access to some data which is private to me. This happens on facebook too.
But for GPL and other old titles, I don't think that any data is sent to Microsoft. Only on crashes and if you allow to send the data. For more modern applications sending the data of a crash is for sure important. If a MS technican can do anything with crash reports from GPL or GEM+, I don't know :)
Even Ubuntu (I know the evil linux distro for some) now has a crash report. From my point of view, sending crash reports can help make an OS better.
Sorry for writing so much. I'm no real MS fanboy but still Linux desktop can't replace my Windows desktop. Programming is possible but all my customers use windows and still want to continue windows so it's better to have a windows system. For online banking I use a Linux desktop though ;)

if it was just the desktop you wanted to replace then you could use another OS . i think you mean that you use windows because it has the programs you use and is less hassle than another OS , all modern OS have a desktop be it windows , mac or linux .

i don't blame you using linux for banking (do you have it installed or do you boot off a usb stick so no data is saved?) , there are some people that think even surfing with windows is unsafe but then some people also wear tin foil hats .

It's a boot cd. Problem today is that even 'normal' websites can be hacked and try everything to infect you via drive-by-downloads which don't rely on user input anymore. So using an up2date linux system which boots and only used for banking website seems safer to me ;)
And no tin foil hats. I have used tin foil on all walls :D

Speaking about security, I followed the link in the new reply to message and it wanted to open:

Still the malware hidden somewhere?
