well what can i say? i mean really? to get away from the 36fps limit was the one wish i had for gpl from very early on. i don't know if i would still be playing driving gpl if it wasn't for 60fps patch. i have to add i have always tried to keep somewhere in touch with the latest technology in my rigs to give the best performance at a reasonable price (mostly not going for high end anymore). so i think my machine can handle whatever i throw at it well enough. and with gpl 60fps is, of course, more demanding than 36fps. i may have been lucky to have been able to run it from the day it (60fps patch) was released and enjoy it, but i would never go back to what was before. even if that means i have to tinker for a bit to get it to work - which to be serious is only selecting the correct of 1-3 versions. and once you did that and got it working, you'll never have to touch it again.
i have been driving all mods (except for the thundercars which i have never driven) and all mods i have access to that are currently in the making using 60fps. and they just work and are awesome that way. and i just cannot see how anyone can claim that 60fps vs 36fps does not make a difference to the experience. i cannot believe you wouldn't see or feel the difference. i honestly can't. of course this has to be tested on a machine that can run gpl @ 60fps and actually show 60fps and not say 44fps which will probably feel worse than 36fps despite being "faster". an important part there is your hardware setup, some of which has been explained above.

what i can understand and will concede is what petteri has always said (if my recollection isn't that far off). the ai will behave somewhat different compared to the original 36fps and you can either deal with that or you can't. i have accepted it and within certain parameters you can customize their behaviour and their strenght to an extent. i am happy with what i have and i solely drive against the ai. they are no more erratic than me and i enjoy racing against them. and even if they may not be as good as the original '67 36fps ai, i get along with them well enough - with a little oddness every once in a while (but using one mod-player across all mods when testing, as compared to individual players when ranking, doesn't help those little buggers to adjust to my speed).

so if there is anything i would want (not really to be honest) is to get the behaviour of the ai to match that of the original '67 36fps closer.

/edit
andy, i should think the rank accepts 60fps - my last few uploads (a long while ago) were made using 60fps
in case anyone cares, i'm running ogl v2, 60fps, dmmm & pribluda at the same time. with all mods.

I have been tweaking many race-games in the past with a lot of video-cards...when I was running my own Site Hansje's World with those lovely Race-game-links-guides, see my join-date :)

There is a big difference when running 36 FPS or 60 FPS with Vsync ON, its a lot easier on the eyes...with 36 FPS there is always a kind of tearing. (no real tearing a kind of)
Have a look at the background when making your turns on the circuit and you see what I mean.
With 60 FPS perfect normal, with 36 FPS it looks like you have been drinking to much...hahaha !!

60 FPS with say 60 HZ gives a perfect picture.

If it wasn't the problems with the AI I always would use 60 FPS without a doubt ;)

Maybe we can pay the guy who can make the ai to match all MOds :) ...is it impossible anyway ?????

For what I recall brr didn't bother to adjust AI since he don't use AI anyway and there is way too many bits that need to be changed all over the exe.
Lots of references linked to the default 36Hz that rule the AI behavior; that's why using 60Hz AI doesn't work properly.
This is what the creator of the patch stated, so I believe him. :)

I use the 60 fps patch whenever I can (which must be every time I run GPL). And I use the AI. I have adapted to them being somewhat uncompetitive. They are still an additional challenge and add to my personal enjoyment - if I don't win, it must have been my fault! This makes racing the AI different from what it was intended to be, but it is still very exciting. And, as we have learned, the AI can be adjusted to be much more competitive. 60 fps works well enough for me, although it may not have made such a big difference on my 100 Hz CRT. I'll certainly stick to it. Thank you, brr! :hat-tip:

I think Jim Pearson had a good point with this:

Quote

So, I think that the equipment you have has a lot to do with how smooth either system [36 or 60] fps look

When the patch first came out, I still had a CRT monitor and the difference, while noticable, wasn't as big as I see with the 40" LCD  TV I use now.  36 fps was a lot smoother on the CRT.

I thought i'd give 60fps another try. Unless I use vsync I still don't see any difference. It may be slightly smoother. Then I tried the AI. Funny. I set them on 0. They should have been fast. I started at the back of the grid, because I knew what was going to happen. Yup! They took off like dragsters, and then turned 1.28 laps at Kyalami. (67 cars)

Before you say it's my system. It's an Alienware gaming system that gets 300fps in iRacing with most of the graphics on max.

If I was a hot lapper I might use 60fps, but i'd rather race. So, it's 36 fps for me.

Thanks Sky, I've had a week off work so have been on GPL every day. I'll maybe try again on Wednesday when I'm not working. I can't remember seeing it running at 60fps so I'll check next time I run it.

Umm... no? Set them to 0.01 and they WILL be fast. Set them to 0 and they will be slower than GPL thinks you are (assuming that you're referring to npt_override).

Isn't 1.0 normal, and 2.0 the slowest?

Yes, and 0 is disabled, or more precisely whatever GPL calculates as your npt (probably around 1.0 to 1.2) instead of using a fixed override.

FloP is correct.

AFAIK, with npt_override set to 0, all the mods use an effective npt of 1.2 until you drive a sufficient number of laps (10?).

Having used 60fps for nearly since the day it came out here, Ive found it a huge improvement and very noticable, especially if you run other sims or games that run about 100 fps. I had to make a huge adjustment to 36 if I ran something that ran at 100fps the same day. 36 looked, "broken".With 60, that problem is gone and gpl is in the modern world for more years to come now, as far as I'm concerned. I have been lucky as far as ai, as I quit racing with them the day I beat them about 13 years ago. As far as the 60fps patch not working right, its never not "worked" right here, and I dont know what that means, apart from ai. A big thing that caused a hit on my older machine online, was the meters being on, but once I turned them off, I was pegged at 60. Other than that, its as easy as clicking or unclicking the option in gem. For those of you afraid to come online and only race with bots, I suggest you speak with another forum member here, "Cookie". He arrived in our live online world of vroc/igor about a year ago from racing the ais for many years, and can tell you nothing good about racing with other humans and 60fps, and will be glad to tell you how much more fun it can be to be with other people live. And finally, have fun in whatever galaxy you are in, but dont bash or discredit others who have spent a lot of time making this work, and those who have had years of no troubles with it. BTW, what are we going to do when brr gets 120fps out for everyone?? :D Enjoy.

Heresy! GPL is meant to be played on 36 fps because it was made that way! Why change something if it´s not broken?! Anyway, our eyes cannot see the difference anyway (36 fps is a LOT more than in movies!) AND it´s breaking our community. All you 60 fps hooligans, get back to where you belong! Is this stupid patch authorized by Kaemmer anyway??? :frown:

A bit harsh, don't you think;  especially when calling someone else a troll.

I've not raced online in years, mainly due to scheduling, my speed, and my connection speed.  The AI in any race sim are problematic, but I can live with their driving more easily than an online race could live with mine.

Ya sry, thats the lament of those without time, online fun. I prefer one person with me on a server over 20 ais so thats where I am different. I've worked 80 hour weeks and still made my league races, but I dont have kids, or a very heavy schedule either, so again I am lucky. Afraid? again, sry if its so harsh to you, its just a way of saying. As far as calling someone a troll, Kanzos trolling hard, and he is a crazy finn who loves 60fps. IMO if your lacking speed, the ai arent gonna teach you anything, where online an hour a week with me, would drop your rank dramatically. As far as online connection, Ive been racing in leagues since dial up days on my dial up in 1999. What issues are there for you that way?
