Well I hope it's ok to do this. I thought it might be a fun and better idea to start a separate thread on the billboards for Spa67, starting with the La Source section. Later I will add a section for the Pit entry, SF straight, Pit exit and Eau Rouge as one section and then finally one last section for the Stavelot area. I'm hoping if I put these here in the main forum anyone who can possibly help will plus hopefully it will create some extra interest to follow developments in this area.

So starting with the entry to Stavelot in 1967 there were first trackside banners along the wall being,

1. Varta batteries 2. 2 x Shell with logo (1 white & 1 black background) 3. LONGINES 4. MARTINI

Finally there was a large GULF logo billboard behind the wall and before the Hotel La Source. For these I have photos and you can see them below. Next will come the section leading down to the pits and here if you can see what I have and hopefully some of you will be able to fill in the gaps so we can get as close as possible to the real thing

EDIT: I have added the Johnnie Walker bb which was on the inside of la source, I forgot this one (see photo A5 below).

Ok, so from my copy of Nine days in Summer here is a panorama looking down from the La Source hairpin. I have numbered each of the billboards to make them easy to identify, check it out. :)

Right here are photos for the Billboards 1 to 25 starting with number 1! I believe francesco has already made a great job of this already but I will post the picks anyway. I also have one of the entry side so it may be of interest.

1. KENT cigarettes, opposite side unknow, SHELL X-100 in the 1950s

2. Completly unknown this one. 9DinS suggests it has a light green background but I could be wrong. It looks like there may be one or two figures in the billboard but again I could be wrong. No proper photo of this one, if you can help great!

3. KENT cigarettes again, unidentified RED writing to the rhs, KENT RED? Anyone know. The billboard is of an open standing packet of cigarettes on a black/dark background with roses to the lhs. Help needed on this one.

4. MARVAN Clothes. Unknown script to the lower right. Something about the 'prijs' possibly, i.e. the best quality and the best price or good price - not sure. No clear photo of the billboard if you have one great! :yeah:

5. 2 x CHAMPION on green background, see photo above

6. REAL Ixelberg - brewery, unknown text to rhs, no clear photo, if you have one please post it :hat-tip:

7. CEAT Tyres, got photo and Text known, if you have a photo of the tyre to the rhs always helpful

8. 3 x ESSO roundels on a green background. All ok

9. JOHNSON cigarettes - all ok. I have updated my last version, will post it here.

10. B.F.Goodrich tyres - again all ok but have done a lot of work to my original so will post it here also.

11. MARTINI - complete

12. FINA - complete

13. UNIROYAL - complete

14. CALTEX with CALTEX Star - ok have photos

...

15. Prestolite (Batteries), have some poor quality photos, a clear one would be very helpful but I have got an idea of what the colours are so could make a reasonable attempt. Some unknown small text to lower rhs.

Something like ' toujours fraiche faux que??? charge seche? ' is it. If someone can confirm   :)

16. Totally unknown, have some very poor snippets of the billboard, it's quite bright and colourful would be good to know what it is

17. LUCAS headlight - no clear photo but have made the billboard. Clear photo again would be good.

18. Again totally unkown but perhaps it is a beverage. Two cartoon style figures in the picture, man and woman, she's drinking a glass of something. There were WHITBREAD billboards at Spa and perhaps this was their 1967 version. Again would be good to know. If you have a photo great as it looks like a really interesting billoard

19. Is a repeat of the Prestolite (see above)

20. VISA cigarettes, no photo at all, would be good to have. Have a photo for the 1966 & 68 VISA billboards but they are both different! Typical, this would be a great find if anyone can :yeah:

21. This was totally unkown to me and still may be! But I possibly had some luck finding out what it is and if so a really interesting billboard. In 1965 it was GIRLING which had a large blue background but with a white surround. The 1966 billboard is all blue and I cannot make anything out except for a line of large white text. In 1967 it was changed again in that the billboard frmae was painted blue to match the billboard, you can see above in the panorama picture and the white text moved to the bottom of the billboard. Anyway if you can shed any light on this it would be good to see :new2:

Finally
22. An interesting BOSCH sparkplug billboard, very original, not certain of the colour but 'BOSCH' appears to be yellow, again clear photo needed although you can see my latest attempt below :hmm:

So onto 23. BATA shoes - complete

24. BASTOS cigarettes, unknown small text at the top but think it may well be J.Bastoz, the originator, have a blurred photo fom Grand Prix, the movie.

25. SANDEMAN port - complete but again I have done a lot to my old version so will post the new one here.

Next will be the pit section and Eau rouge. The billboards at Spa are really fascinating they contain a lot of history over the years and for the main appear to be unique to the circuit. It's been really interesting researching it all.

Latest work, here is the BOSCH sparkplug man, billboard number 22, I used a figure from a 1967 advert I found but edited him extensively. He's got winkel pickers, a rather loud shirt on and I gave him a driving cap! Well you may as well have some fun until a better photo turns up.

I think in the original billboard he's kneeling on the sparkplug screwthread but that's got to hurt so I put him a bit further up :D  I've guessed the main background to be a dark blue :idunno:  , here he is...

Right, well with regard to the blue billboard number 21! This is pure guesswork, so a photo from 1967 is still wanted! But this particular billboard had me really intrigued as I simply could not find anything to give me an idea what it was but then by a possible piece of luck I found some photos from Spain 1970 and in them was an all blue billboard with a single line of white text except in this case the text was at the top. Having looked into the billboards at Spa quite a bit, I'm aware that there was a lot of continuity over the years although they did get changed a lot, including from one race to the next during the same year, or being moved to a different location or swapped out if they related specifically to F1 or the 24hrs or 1000km races etc.

Anyway here is the photo I found, and from this I could imagine that there was possibly a very similar earlier version on the same celebration in 1967. It relates to SHELL coin tokens (jetons), they had a series which started I believe in the 1960s and was followed through into the 1970s celebrating man's conquering of the skies. Each token had a different subject I picked the 1966 celebration of Armstrong and Scott's Gemini flight of 1966. The FONT type is quite modern for 1967 but there were a lot of changes to more modern fonts in 1967 and onwards by advertisers. If I should be right about this billboard it would be fun as some of you may realise my avatar is of apollo 11 launching. So this along with the BOSCH rocket sparkplug driver I'm a happy man! :D

So, if you folks can help with any of the these or others please post you infos here. I will try and make more billboards as and when I have time. Hopefully we can end up with a complete set for the Spa67 release.

Oh yes finally, back last year when looking for 1960s style fonts I came across some really nice 1960's and early 70s advertising and posters. A lot of the designs were very original and colourful and it gave me the idea to possibly making a complete set of fictionary and spoof billboards for Spa, all from work of the 1960s, here are some I've already made, Casino Royal, Lacoste, Jean Claude Killy and Jimi Hendrix and an art Gallery.

All I can say about the middle part is that "faut que" would appear to make just a little bit more sense to me (but still not really much). I can confirm that the rest reads "Toujours fraîche... chargée sèche".

Thanks FloP, that Ixelberg is great Posted Image . I have opened up the Prestolite bb from your photo and attach here maybe it's a bit clearer. I also found another photo of it of mine and it seems clearer, perhaps it can make sense?

Thanks for the help  Posted Image
