Dark, to quote John MacEnroe, "Are you serious" ?-on the Civil War bit anyway. It is American (and Canadian but on a different day) and is basically Harvest Festival, but with amuch more 'urgent' feeling about it in that it was celebrated by the first settlers because they had a good harvest and had, literally, not starved to death !
Now they (we) celebrate with the sort of feast that you (we) English traditionally eat at Christmas, turkey etc but not plum pudding. Pumpkin pie instead, which I do not like !
The 'we' is because I hold dual-citizenship - actually triple, Irish originally
