From NVIDIA:

"We are aware that some customers have reported fan speed issues with the latest 196.75 WHQL drivers on NVIDIA.co.uk. Until we can verify the root cause for this issue, we recommend that customers stay with, or return to 196.21 WHQL drivers. The 196.75 drivers have been temporarily removed from our website."

It seems that this problem affects those who use automatic fan speed control. Forcing fan speed to a somewhat high fixed level (I've always done this anyway and use 75 percent) should be enough (but monitor temperatures and fan speed to make sure).

Nvidia has released their 197.13 drivers that are supposed to fix problems with earlier drivers.  I have had issues with unstable drivers for over a year, so hoped for the best.  Deleted and cleaned up after the good ol' 186.18s and installed the newbies.  Fired up GEM and watched a 66s at Targa race @60fps in OGL V2.  30fps!!?!?!?!  Fps stayed low for a long time too.  :hmm:  Then tried D3D V2.  52fps bog which immediately came up to 60fps and stayed there.   :) This is much worse performance for OGL and better performance for D3D.  They used to be about the same with a slight edge for D3D.
So, I fired up the Unigine Benchmark.  I had run it just last week, so had a good baseline.  OGL was in between DX9 and DX10.  This time DX10 was slightly better, DX9 was much better, and OGL got a black screen saying there was a problem with memory.     I ran Memtest all night.  The memory is fine.   ^_^

Could Nvidia be giving up on OGL?  How is work coming on Pribluda for D3D?  Personally I prefer OGL.

It's only a my (usually wrong) impression, or NVIDIA drivers become worse and worse at any new release?

In the past NVIDIA was famous (here in Italy, at least) for very powerful GPUs and ABOVE ALL for stable + reliable drivers, high compatibility and performances with most of the graphics engines out there, and for "easy to tweak" control panel options. All these things seem to be almost lost in the last 2 or 3 years. One of the few last remaining advantages was the great performance with opengl, if it has gone too I think that if I could live enough to purchase a new pc and/or a new video card I will return to ATi, as many other users have already done in the last 3 years.

I use Nvidia and latest drivers, opengl v2 rasteriser seems to work well for me. It is possible that there are some necessary compromises in the drivers, and older hardware and software might be affected by this. My card is somewhat old (8800gs), but I have not noticed that new drivers would have made a big difference either way. One thing which can affect even new hardware is text rendering with v2 rasteriser. Anyone having fps problems with v2 rasterisers might find it worthwhile to compare fps when all text rendering is disabled (no pribluda, no DDM, not even F10 view).
