Way back when I had a gut feeling that something was up with "FIRST" when they started this shite with Redline & GTP mod. and the fallout has begun. Here is a statement
from Jan at The Pits & their GN70 mod now.

We have been informed by FIRST that releasing this project with modified physics would violate their copyrights regarding the use of the NR2003 source code. While this is definitely a disappointment given the amount of realism we wished to put into GN1970, but they are the proper owners of the code and we will respect their rights to it.

Please note that this will also include any release of physics editing tools that we were intending to release to the public, we will no longer be able to do so.

We apologise to the community for going back on our word, however we do wish to abide by the legal rights afforded to FIRST by Federal Copyright law. The Pits has always stood by the legal rights of authors and we will continue to do so.

Stories have been brewing at almost every forum.  :crap:

Another example is here with Brian Ring and his efforts!
BR2004 will not be released and has been cancelled as of now. I have been informed by FIRST-RACING.NET that releasing this project would violate their copyrights regarding the use of the NR2003 source code. While this is definitely a disappointment given the amount of time and effort I have put into BR2004, they are the proper owners of the code and I respect their rights to it. I am confident that their team will be releasing a product in the future that will far surpass the scope of BR2004 and that the sim community will be better for it.

Have Fun
Brian Ring

So does it look like FIRST is trying to wipeout all competitors?    :censored:

And what was BrianRing mod. about you may ask?
The brian ring mod was going to have updated graphics, Track lines, and updated "Physics" to reflect the current rules/aero package!
Again our loss!
Actually come visit his site !

There are some odd things happening that's for sure.

I believe The US Pits will still be releasing their 1970 Mod (they are still working on it)
http://www.tptcc.com...t=8787&start=45
but it will use the standard NR2003 physics I believe.

Have you seen these though, 2 extra physics add-ons for NR2003?

I'm not quite sure what's being "modded" here...Are the mods that are being worked on or have been released include "hacked" executables??? Is that what the BS is about???

For what it is worth, I emailed DT99 and TMcArthur a possible workaround to the  problem...A binary comparison program...

I used this program [MDIFF] 10 years ago, when I was hacking "Doom/Doom2" and wanted to introduce new graphics for the weapons and modify the physics. The curator of CDROM.COM at that time was Ty Halderman, and he was adamant about *NO* hacked executables. The answer was to use a binary comparator and store the differences in binary form in a file which could be applied to the original executable via a patch program. This form of modification satisfied the copyright-violation issue.

In my case, I set everything up to install via a batch file (about the limit of my coding ability).

The beauty of it is that it is entirely the responsibility of the end-user, and not the party that originated the mod.  No hacked executable is distributed; no copyright is violated.

If I knew anyone on the GTP team, I would suggest this workaround to them as well...But since the site is down, their emails are down, too...

Technically way over my head but I really like the idea/thinking behind it. Brilliant way to use w/ a certain "number"

It also requires you to have the unmodified executable (or whichever file you wish to update) beforehand for the patch to work...

http://www.redlinedevelopments.com/ is working, a link to a working email is there plus the forum is up.

Apart from the team mentioned you could try John Prather (Jprather) on RSC where he posts in the GTP section.

PS. I was thinking about similar things too only the other day, using a GEM+ style launcher.

Got an email reply from Tim McArthur saying he already has a small file
that makes a few specific changes and nothing more...

Seems GTP will be released again in the next few days according to this, http://www.first-racing.net/

One off permission to modify physics from FIRST, so I wonder what else they may have been able to add in the meantime?

I'm wondering what else they will have to take out...

Ford owns Jaguar...Think Ford will agree to use of their corporate logos on the cars, or on the menus??? How about Sauber, Toyota, Nissan...It goes on and on...What about the little car sponsor decals?...Does *everything* require permission???

I am relieved to see that FIRST is taking a more reasonable attitude towards GTP...If they work it right, that could be a good bit of change...More sales of Nr2003 to play GTP on...
