Logged on today for the first time in several years. Totally chuffed that GPL is still going strong. Looking to jump back in and looking for guidance on wether I should buy a new computer or use an old laptop I have. What kinds of stats do I need for a computer to run GPL reliably?

Welcome back!

Most hardwares works well with GPL. There are topics on this, search for "new pc" or "hardware".

If your old Laptop has a dedicated GPU and a 2-4 core CPU you should be almost fine.
An SSD could push the oldie much and RAM minimum 4GB better 8GB

Show us what you have ;)

Modern GPL tracks can have a lot of hi-res texture files, so having 4GB of video RAM can definitely be beneficial. You can probably get away with 2GB, but you may get a bit of stuttering at some tracks as textures are swapped between RAM and VRAM. Some tracks have alternate lo-res or low-detail files available to help avoid this problem. An SSD will help loading times at larger tracks too.

Freedog you could install the GPL 2020 Demo and test if it runs on your laptop.
