I feel that Joe --like many others-- never tried a good sim, they just can't see further than Gran Turismo :D

A shame, I enjoyed reading some of his articles about motor racing.

Eh, they removed my comment... Perhaps I shouldn't have mentioned Grand Prix Legends.... They took it as a product advertisment..

I personally think that "E-Sports" are fine and dandy... as long as those don't mix with real sports.

Just as an example, I'm sure that there is not one single simracer that, once trying a real race car, didn't break it in a catastrophic way or ended up being mocked to hell and back for his/her absolutely wrong driving style.
The Delta Wing comes to mind... or GT Academy. Heck, even "The World's Fastest Gamer" programme didn't do McLaren any favours.
You want to be a real racer AND a simracer? Take the advice of Enzo Ferrari:

"You want to be a racer? Well, buy a car and drive it."

The guy who won that is actually doing great, he really is a part of the team. He also drove some real life cars, even a McLaren M23 at Goodwood!

Norbert Michelisz (WTCC/WTCR) was one the best drivers and multiple champion in our Hungarian GPL Masters league. But that's another thread somewhere on SRMZ :)

There are several drivers that came out of GT Academy that are plying their trade quite successfully in real world racing series.

Yeah, two off the list.

But for every Norbert Michelisz there are thousands of Karthikeyans, though. Let's look at the GT Academy, for example:

2010: Winner was Frenchman Jordan Tresson. Got lambasted (and then fired) by the Signatech-Nissan team for being stupidly reckless and slow both in the 24H of Le Mans and the whole WEC Championship in 2012. After that, he raced in the European GT3, collecting an impressive collection of "DNF" and "0" since 2013.

2008: Lucas Ordonez, from Spain. Looked like a promising bet after his solid start in the 2009 GT3 European Championship and a win in 2011 in the GT3 Pro-Am, but after that... nothing. Zeroes and DNFs abound.

And these are just two... if you go in the Wikipedia page about the GT Academy and check the winners in driverdb.com, you'll see that usually they do a couple of wins and then nothing for years. Not even a finish.
