True, and sometimes life stinks and we complain about it. If you have the same Italian blood that I do, you'll get mad too.

No doubt about that, I'd be swearing like mad! But us italians do so only when we really care about something, if you think about it ;) so in the end, I think it'll make things more exciting, rather than just annoying

Days with the option of 24, 36, or 48 hours, and if new mods are to come, also 72 hours could be a good option.

I agree with Fat Rich that our track building tools can be better, easiest to handle and with performances less limited. For example:

More surface types with appropriate grip levels and sounds: gravel, cobbles, smooth paving, timber bridges etc. Customizable :)

I must do the jarama pianos and I think there is not a surface type for this. Also have the classic clipping problems that makes the track building so difficult to manage.

A thread to dream... :D

This functionality is already in GPL and explained in the track making tutorial. There is NO REASON to put up with angular / blocky corners in GPL.  Never was!

If a corner apex looks too blocky, use these solutions, in order, until the corner looks smooth.

1. Split the corner into two equal parts which doubles the amount of polys.

2. Open Wall "0" and use unk 4 4096 value.

3. Open Wall "0" and use unk 4 2048 value. Be careful with this one as the number of polys is increased by a factor of 5 for that section. Can cause issues with frame rates and TV Cam freezes if you use too much of this.

Sometimes a corner will look smooth in the driving view but blocky in a TV Cam view. I think that has something to do with your detail bias settings.

If you are making videos, try using max detail bias.

Thanks for the info Jim, will do some experimenting.

It would be great if GPL could be patched to increase the polys automatically for existing tracks using the LOD code to produce more polys than it does currently. But I can imagine it would cause clipping problems with trackside objects in some circumstances so might cause more problems than it solves :)

PS I didn't mention that there is another overall setting to address this "Blocky Corner" issue.

The "SET" file is a simple text file needed to compile your track. It has a value at the seventh line for "corner error"; usually expressed at values between 0.1 to 0.01.

Using a value of 0.1 allows larger corner errors so the track looks blocky, however the track 3do is relatively smaller and more frame rate and TV Cam friendly. Possibly also less prone to on line disco issues at "busy/complicated" sections of track. [ untested by me ] Ginetto would know more.

Using a value of 0.01 produces a much smoother track, however you may still need to use the unk 4 values above in some corners. The downside is a larger track 3do and potential TV Cam freezes/lockups and on line problems.

If your track is a simple layout, try a value of 0.05.

For my current long project I am finding 0.07 is about as low as I can go without TV1 Cams freezing in some spots.

Good luck.

Yes agree completely - that would be great - but I also reiterate that I love it as it is after 15 years playing it.

GPL is so diverse in the way people use it. The wish list is just as diverse. My wish list in no particular order are:
A five speed transmission for the BT (basic trainer cars).
COTA, Circuit of The Americas. I know this is a lot of work.
Some way to rotate the tachometer so the shift point is straight up.

Very funny Michkov. Unfortunately I'm more of a technician than an artist. I do really appreciate the track maker artists in GPL though.
Like I said, I know it's a lot of work. I was kind of trolling to see if there was a work in progress.

Warren, it's really quite easy to rotate the tachometer to have the shift/max rpm point at 12 o'clock:

1.  Convert the dash .mip to a .bmp or .jpeg file.
2.  Use a graphics editor such as Photoshop to cut out the tachometer face.  Rotate it to the required position, then paste it back in.
3.  Convert it back to a new .mip file.
4.  Use GPL Track Editor to open the car .3do file.  Change the MIRP ptach rotation value in radians by the same number of degrees you rotated the tachometer face.  Do the same for the ptell rotation value.

That's it.  It might take a while the first time you try, but each car should be quicker once you learn.

Most mods only have seven cars so, not counting the extended mods, you only have about 70 cars to do.  :)

I knew the three first steps for some time now, but I didn't know how to do the fourth...

A thousand thanks !!! It's very precious to me, and I hope for more than one person...

Lee, is it this line for the ptach rotation value?

Greg. yes although I think you can edit the Flavor 22 line too as that modifies the previous line.

I'm away from my notes and can't remember which rotation (A, B, or C) you have to change.  I'm pretty sure B is the fore/aft tilt of the needle.  All the original GPL cars used a dash/needle tilt of about .3 radians which tilts the top of the needle away.

Either A or C does the rotation you're interested in.

Hi Lee,

I remember reading somewhere that the driver's head tilt can be changed to a different plane. Right now the head rotates in the transverse plane. Can one change it to rotate in the coronal plane, i.e. tilting the head sideways while still looking ahead? You see a lot of videos and images of racers doing just that when cornering.
Thanks.

Joe

Joe, are you talking about the Bobble Head patch?   It rotates the external view of the driver's head in all three axes.

If you are talking about the what the player sees in the cockpit view, I don't have a patch for that (well actually I do, but testers didn't like it so I never released it).  I believe you can use GPL Glance to do that though.
