OK, while things were quiet I started looking around my track folders and have two questions, hopefully someone can advise on these.

1) I have lots of tracks that have had no 'updates' for along time but they contain additional mip and other files not in the .dat. What can I add to the .dat and then delete from the track folder and what MUST remain as free standing files in the track folder.

2) Notice some tracks have setup.ext and setup69.ext files can these be simply moved to my mod specific player and deleted from track folder.

Yes I know I have too much time on my hands and it wont really save much space. Thanks anyway

lp, ini, jpg and PREGEM files need to remain ouraide the dat file. 3do, mip, pbf can be moved  into the dat

Not sure what ext files do, so I'd leave them loose in the folder. My guess would be they link to default setups for the specific track. On that note, pdf, txt, db files do nothing and can be removed from the trackfolder.

As I understand...
An EXE only calls up the files it wants to use, looks outside DAT first, and ignores all others including same name inside DAT.
If moved inside that would overwrite originals.
So maybe moving files into DAT is no so good an idea?

Moving files around saves no space.

If a file outside the dat file shares a name with a file inside the dat file, and GPL utilizes only one of those files (i.e. the one outside the dat file), and both files take up hard drive space, then doesn't it stand to reason that one of those two files is superfluous (and therefore filling hard drive space unnecessarily)? Wouldn't removing one save space?

As long as the track works properly with all those loose files, then there is no reason why they can't be packed into the dat file. In fact I used to do that with Winmip2, which has a built-in "unpack/pack" feature. I don't know why, but after re-packing, some tracks worked perfectly well, others not at all. Just be sure to back up the folder before re-packing. And yes, of course, Michkov is right about which files must remain loose in the folder, but the Winmip2 "pack" function sorts all that out for you (as I recall -- it's been a long time).

Eventually I gave up doing this because there were just too many tracks being produced. I couldn't keep up with them all.

Please doubt severely my posts made before 9am.
Or before morning coffee except that doesn't seem to make much difference.
Thanks.

No idea how it works, (have some sort-of quasi-theories), but if GPL looks outside first then that would be faster to load up and run?

Does Grand Prix Legends also query/load/run each file individually, so each time DAT opening interface is triggered before action is taken? (Or whatever...is there such a thing?).

Seems maybe brr posted something about this awhile back.

Just wondering if its better to have all files outside rather than in a DAT.

Load a big track from a dat vs unpack and take the time. The timing should be the hardest part in this setup but not impossible.

Loaded unpacked Zandy with no DAT.
Can't tell if its any different.
Maybe?

If there is any difference while running on track it would have to be milliseconds?
So not so easy to analyze?

Wondering about FPS improvement even if slight.

Be careful when packing dats. Make  backup copy of the track or car folder before you start.

Some large textures ( larger than 512x512 ) do not like being in a dat and will cause the track to not load if they are packed. It is best to leave those large textures loose in the folder.

I dont think GPL looks at the dat once the track is loaded. It probably loads the textures in temporary memory and accesses them from there. Mind you this is pure speculation on my part.

That makes sense given larger track folders take longer to load.

Not knowing anything is confusing.

Thanks for all the replies, my main thought was for tracks that have several alternative updates that I use. Seemed easier to pack these into a 'new' .dat and simply rename the .dat that I wanted to use an alternative rather than copying files in each time maybe from different backups.

Can you add mod specific files to the dat eg. m55 mips ?.

Assume the same thoughts/answers apply to updating dat in car folders ?

No, only common *.mip, *.3do ...
