I left the door open to non-Mod members to show their expertise in numbering.  Our team have had years to gather this information.  I'll include everyone in asking why 13 was unused, after it won a championship.

I expect that it is the convention that 13 is an unlucky number, since 13 (the 12 apostles and Jesus Christ)  participated in the Last Supper, immediately before He was taken, judged and crucified.
Hawthorne may have asked for it and when numbering went to even numbers it would have fallen out of use anyway

Hawthorne made the surprising decision to retire upon winning the Championship.  Soon after, he was killed while driving on an ordinary English public road.  As we racers can be a superstitious lot, the general concensus was, it was proof his luck had finally caught up with him.

In America, our 2000 year old numerical oddity did not  take the same hold, and 13 holds no mystique to some racers.  NASA scientists in the 1970's, strove to kill all remnants of such outdated strangeness, with the launch of something called Apollo 13!

That dreaded number has again returned to F1 with P.Maldonado.  He has thusfar managed to survive, although some of his cars have not. :)
