Mech, is it worth trying to clear them and do a clean re-install?
(If so, what is the best way to do it? I'm not used to this sort of stuff.)
I believe you can remove Gem from your software install/uninstall menu.
Then you can check with regedit under the local menu software section if the gem+ and gplmods entries are gone. if not deleting should suffice. Also check for remnants in the gem install folder, should be somewhere under gplsecrets. You can check the location by looking at the shortcut properties.
The try a new install with the all-in-one installer.
Before you copy stuff from the old install first test the base install (67)

There is no need for the glide.dll at all.
When GPL asks for it, it is because something else is wrong.
If anything it would mess things up and confuse things, but don't think so. If it has any effect it is only complicating whatever else is going on. Would not hurt to delete it anyway as you seem to indicate it has some effect.

GPL Demo not working is only surprising if it works for others using Win7. Can't recall whether it does or not, seems I recall some issues...sorry it was difficult to make that point earlier.

As Bob asked earlier and I find no answer (yet), you have tried others sims and they all work?

Well I don't have any other sims but I just installed Arsenal of Democracy (excellent WW2 strategy game) and it ran fine first time. So it seems to be something to do with GPL that is causing the problem - and it is the same for the vanilla original game, the 2004 demo, or the game installed using the 1.04 or 1.07 installers, whether run via Gem+ or not.

Guess you have seen this:http://srmz.net/inde...7592#entry70810

FloP makes an interesting comment in post 2 that might be relevant here.

John, nope, that didn't work either.

I really think I need to go shopping...

How many people have got GPL running on Windows 8? Any problems?

Some in my league got it running on Win8 with no problems. But I wouldn't spend money for it, since MS will release Win10 as a free upgrade for private users from Win7 on, so that is wasted money imho.

Maybe your problems are rooted in the Intel Graphics chipset? (Just a guess, I can't remember having read about that around here, mostly it's Nvidia or ATI).

Do you have the latest driver for that installed?

I think JonnyA is asking about win8 because, if he needs to buy a new PC, it will have that installed; no win7 anymore.

Ginetto, you are correct except I can't afford a new PC, it will be used but some I have looked at have Win 8 installed.

As FloP mentined, since some files get saved to C:\Users\Public\Documents\GEM+\ (anyone understand why?) - when making a re-install, is it necessary to delete that folder entirely?

Not for me, Bob.  After seeing the link that John posted of my old thread(can't believe that was 3 years ago!), and seeing your post, I checked my PC and I have GEM+ folders in both places.  I have GPLSecrets folder on my C: drive and I have the GEM+ folder in my users/documents area.  Strange thing is that both seemed to be used by GEM.  It uses some files in GEM+ in documents, including GEM and SGEM configuration files, GEM_Log, and Debug.  The GPLSecrets folder uses the pictures folders and GPLPatchLog document.  Going by the date modified in the configuration files in GPLSecrets folder, they haven't been modified since being installed on this PC.

I can't see any instance where GEM is using the same file or folder in each place that GEM+ folder is on my PC

My point is that usually when you delete and then re-install GEM, the C:\Users\Public\Documents\GEM+ foleder doesn't get deleted.  It looks like it should or at least the file that is getting updated - gem.ini

The "important" file that is stored in C:\Users\Public User\Documents\GEM+ folder is GEM.ini which it does not get overwritten by a new installation.

If you want a brand new GEM+ installation, you should delete it but you can delete it even after (you can try it out with previous back-up of it).
Without GEM.ini file GEM+ opens with the initial settings asking for GPL folder and such.

Just spent a few minutes searching forums for "Win7."
JonnyA, surely you have done this?
Several threads about it, maybe some hints there.
And you are not alone.

Not sure how GEM+ messes up running Grand Prix Legends without GEM+?
Doesn't this indicate 1) problem is not with GEM+, and/or 2), there is more than one problem, one outside GEM+ and one inside?

John, I've searched for and read dozens of threads over the last week or so, and tried every suggested fix I could find. I don't think the problem is anything to do with Gem+. I think it is something fundamental between GPL and my processor and/or graphics driver. I've had 2 weeks with no GPL and it's long enough.

I really do appreciate the number of people who have commented on this thread (or even just read it) but enough is enough. I'm starting shopping this evening.

I just reread the initial postings.

Am I right Jonny, you want to use the DirectX rasterizers?

As even the V2 versions use old DX maybe you should install that  DX9 0610 package...
The DirectX redist installation includes all the latest and previous released DirectX runtime.
http://www.microsoft...ls.aspx?id=8109

If this does not help there is no harm done...

Another problem could be that the MS KB3004394 is installed on your W7 64! From Dec 2014!
This has to be removed! by installing http://support2.micr...b/3004394/en-us

I just found that MS update had installed this known faulty patch KB3004394 today !!!

Cookie,

Thank you very much for re-reading the thread. I actually received my new PC yesterday and I managed to load the 1.07 GPL installer and GPL. Vanilla GPL runs OK - I now need to create a player and install Gem+, but I think it will turn out OK. I'l let you know.

If I get time I'll go back to my laptop and try removing the update and see if it helps.

For myself, who always wants to know "why" regarding GPL problems - let us know if you ever get any insight into why GPL wouldn't run on your laptop.  This has been quite a mystery.
