I'm one of those guys who likes to paint and drive his own car, I see cars sets, but I don't see templates in some of my quick searches(my free time is very limited). I also know that getting cars into GPL isn't easy either, but I'll cross that bridge when I come to it. For now I'd just like to find the templates please.

I don't recall ever seeing templates.  The few cars I've painted were done by extracting the files, converting to bmp, painting, and reconverting. (And the topic always reminds me of a carset from the early years - with swimsuit models on the nose of each car.)

Get GPL Image Viewer and use it to look at mips in an installed car folder of choice and select mip file to mod.
Copy X.mip to separate "working" folder named "X.mip"
(This way you are not playing around inside your GPL install).
Use WinMip2 to convert mip to bmp.
(Play close attention to readme regarding file names).
Open bmp file using any paint program, MSPaint, Photoshop, Paint.net etc.
Make changes.
Save/export to working folder as bmp file.
Convert to mip using WinMip2.
Re-name/save elsewhere original X.mip in car folder.
Install/save-overwrite modded file back into car folder.
Open Grand Prix Legends to view result.

Da-tah!

BTW, there is a way I forget to keep GPL open in a window so changes can be viewed w/o having to go thru tedious routine each time checking results.

Thanks guys, I thought it was something like that, was hoping after all these years someone somewhere would have made a template package, LOL!

Easy since the cars are already in GPL and you are just taking the mips out?
No need for templates is probably why there are none?

Good luck with it for sure.
