Motivated by the post about the remains of the lost race tracks

http://srmz.net/inde...showtopic=13637

I decided to start a new thread collecting other historic testimonials available in youtube videos about the original layout of GPL tracks, preferably with onboard scenes. Since there is a lot of material available at youtube I will provide this information in several posts.

Here I will start with an overview of several more or less known motion pictures providing a lot of real racing action on the classic race tracks of the 1960‘s and early 1970‘s.

Let‘s start with the iconic „Grand Prix“ (1966) movie. Special scenes at Monaco, Monza, Zandvoort, Spa, Clermont-Ferrand, and Brands Hatch are displayed including spectacular onboard action. The complete movie in high resolution quality is available here:

https://www.youtube....h?v=QFKUtDQsk_4

The race scenes of the final race at the Monza 10k track in high resulution quality is available in the following link:

https://www.youtube....h?v=7HA71tYl640

Re-Edit:

fantastic racing and onboard action at Zandvoort in the "Grand Prix" movie:

https://www.youtube....h?v=gfv9LVTG0Po

The next movie I recommend is the „Le Mans“ (1971) movie:

https://www.youtube....h?v=Me-caUXkP-U

„Nell‘Inferno Del Grand Prix“ (1970) is a very bad and cheap remake (imo) of the Grand Prix topic. The movie is in Italian and the youtube copy is of poore quality. If you do not understand Italian it doesn‘t matter since the movie itself is not worth to be watched. Nevertheless there are displayed interesting racing scenes including onboard action, especially several testing laps the classic Monza track without chicanes.

https://www.youtube....h?v=fhLb5UWI4p4

The movie „Winning“ (1969) is somehow the US equivalent to „Grand Prix“ displaying a lot of Indy 500 action in the 60s but also other sports car, CanAm and touring car races at other US tracks are displayed.

In one piece:
https://www.youtube....h?v=3AFwx1a04RY

or in several parts:

https://www.youtube....h?v=NRtIvn_E2S4

That‘s the first part of the collection of youtube links related to the historical layout of the classic race tracks available in GPL and the modded versions. Others I will post soon.

Have fun

Thomas

This is the second part collecting interesting links with more specific movie scenes focussing on the original Papy tracks (first half of the season):

Kyalami

not really too much available and often of poor quality

https://www.youtube....h?v=Opc750FLIPk

onboard cam 1982

https://www.youtube....h?v=NCzQ9S5_1X0

an onboard lap with Alain Prost

https://www.youtube....h?v=aoZrBNsuMZc

Monaco

nothing better than the scenes in „Grand Prix“ but nevertheless interesting

https://www.youtube....h?v=pIomnQVm5dI

https://www.youtube....h?v=i1vYRMuLvpM

1962 yet with the old railway station

https://www.youtube....h?v=ZqdcNi5MbS0

Zandvoort

an onboard lap with Patrick Tambay in 1978. The track is significantly unchanged compared to the GPL version of the track with the only exception of the Panoramabocht.

https://www.youtube....h?v=KoPwwFKFPxc

Spa

onboard cam out of a private car in 1958

https://www.youtube....h?v=CLWPANb8sHU

and in 1962

https://www.youtube....h?v=ghH2YubYwO8

https://www.youtube....h?v=VnMFPBWyk24

Unfortunately I did not found any racing onboard action on the old Spa circuit. Perhaps someone else has found better links. Nevertheless by watching these videos you realize what an outstanding contribution to our sim represents the Spa ‘67 track.

Rouen

onboard view of the complete track in 1962. I would say that the layout of the original Papy track is not too bad……

https://www.youtube....h?v=OwIfa0w1lxQ

https://www.youtube....h?v=FxtAZvv0WgQ

https://www.youtube....h?v=p7YpsWmsqVs

and the famous hairpin

Enjoy!

"Mosport

As a veteran of some two dozen races at Mosport between 1974-83, I can tell you that on first acquiring GPL, I went straight to Mosport for a run in the BRM.  My impression?  It was just like going home.  :)

There could be some improvement in trackside objects and features but otherwise, it's an accurate ride.

In this post I will provide several links featuring historic videos of some famous French race tracks available for GPL. Remember that there are some YT links related to the Rouen track given in one of my previous posts.

Le Mans

onboard cam on a Jaguar D-Type

https://www.youtube....h?v=IpRFagIbcPE

Onboard action during training/qualifying in a Porsche 936 (1977). It‘s notable that the top speed on the Hunaudières/Mulsanne straight should be approx. 350 km/h. Remember that in 1971 the Porsche 917 was clocked at 386 km/h…… The race course is almost unchanged compared to the post war era without chicanes. The only exception is the double chicane at the entrance of the starting and finishing area.

Reims

Grand Prix 1961

https://www.youtube....h?v=_6-1SfuzyT0

https://www.youtube....h?v=btc2p9Cq9HU

Charade/Clermont-Ferrand

Inaugural races in 1959 (sports cars and Formula 2). The track was just opened. You can yet see the remains of the construction works. Good quality of the youtube copy of this coloured videos. Interestingly there are two versions of the Porsche 718 involved in the F2 race: the spyder sports car (which complied to the F2 regulations) and the blue monoposto.

https://www.youtube....h?v=pvIDfqP8pIU

I hope you like these vids. Personally I like very much the Charade streams.

In this post I provide several links related to some of my favourite US tracks.

Riverside

some explanations about the confusing variations of this track over the decades:

https://www.youtube....h?v=Pd0s1Fw2FN8

The 1966 version (riside66 ) in 1960:

https://www.youtube....h?v=0TLEEKbBK04

1963:

https://www.youtube....h?v=YU-kCySwwZ0

https://www.youtube....h?v=t_-D36sUg6A

The short course in 1965 as provided by Ginetto in his rsid66SC version (onboard):

https://www.youtube....h?v=zakPard0iKI

The ‘71 version (river71) as provided by Ginetto in onboard action on a Porsche 962 during a sports car race in 1985:

https://www.youtube....h?v=C_kG13L2XeM

Another onboard cam on this late version of the track:

https://www.youtube....h?v=nKEwWdIT-Ms

By watching the onboard scenes you will recognize how accurate the Ginetto renditions of this track are. They are really "pieces of art". In my opinion they belong to the best and most realitic contributions for GPL.

Roosevelt Raceway/Vanderbilt Cup

Unfortunately there is only rare footage of these important races and of relativeley poor quality.

A general compilation:

The 1936 race:

https://www.youtube....h?v=_RPa8KCCVkM

The 1937 race. In this year was introduced the banking which can be seen in some sequences:

In the old TV series "It Takes A Thief" there's an episode called "Steal Drivin' Man";  the highly improbable plot has Mundy given a couple of days training driving an F1 car to compete in a race (not only is he instantly competitive, he actually spins a couple of times without losing position).  Costars Dick Smothers, Mario Andretti, and the rain soaked '67 GP at Mosport as the "Grand Prix of Cordona".  There's enough footage of the race to make this worth watching.

In my last contribution I posted links providing historic racing scenes of the pre-war Roosevelt race track. Another track which was famous (and feared) in the pre-war and immediate post-war era was the Bremgarten circuit in the outskirts of the Swiss capital Bern. The last race took place there in 1954. But even today you can find approx. 2/3 of the former race course layout in public roads, forest tracks and cycle tracks. In this post I will bring to your attention this wonderful track which was developped for GPL by a local enthusiasts team in 2001. Further graphic and texture updates have been published since there.

Unfortunately I have not found any onbord scene and only rare historic video material of this track. Nevertheless you will realize that the 2001 GPL realizitation of the track including the texture updates seems to be quite felicitous.

I don't know if this has been posted yet, so, here goes...

This movie stars Kirk Douglas. It features both sports car and grand prix racing.  Many of the old circuits. Great of Mille Miglia story.

Another quaint film from 1961. But hard to get any footage of it 'The Green Helmet'

Info: U.K. film. Awesome racing footage from Le Mans, Sebring, Mille Miglia and Silverstone. Cool cars include: Tojeiro-Jaguar, Arnolt-Bristol, Ferrari 340 MM, Gordon GT, Birdcage Maserati, Bentley Mk VI, and others. Special guest appearance by real life Australian world champion Jack Brabham

.......

It might not fit 100% into this thread. But by browsing YT regarding videos displaying the old Österreichring I found an interesting video focussing on the differences between the textures of the original Zeltw71 track as provided by Jackseller and the texture pack by Thomas Lächele which seems not to be that popular in the GPL community (in contradiction to Thomas' other wonderful texture updates for other tracks). I think this might be of interest also for others who like this track. The first lap displays the original textures and backgrounds by Jackseller, the secon lap displays the Lächele update.

https://www.youtube....h?v=_LyY65ySfhI

The Lächele look is probably closer to reality. Nevertheless the original textres are realy good and personally I prefer the original version. A question of personal preferences.....
