Adding to the information provided in the P&G Showroom History and Specs, Triumph TR-4 numbers 36-37-38 were all prepared identically by R. W. “Kas” Kastner to race the 1963 Sebring 12 Hours. The Dunlop tires for the cars did not arrive in time, so these cars were fitted with Goodyear Blue Streak Sports Car Special tires for the race. The Goodyears were wider than the Dunlaps, so to pass race scrutineering, lips were fitted to the outside edges of the fenders to cover the tires. Those of us who are sticklers for historicity can make a couple of minor changes in P&G to reflect the story:
- The "HDVehicle=" line in 63037_gto2_tr4.car and 63038_gto2_tr4.car should be changed from HDVehicle=TRIUMPH_TR4_LHD.HDC to HDVehicle=COUP_TRMPH_TR4.HDC to match the corresponding line in the 63036_gto2_tr4.car file. This will make all three of these cars operate identically. Without this change, cars #37 and #38 use 1967-71 Dunlops instead of those for 1963, and they also have lower and lighter bodywork than car #36. The net effect is that without these changes, the 37 and 38 cars run faster laps than they should.
- To emulate the tires actually used on these cars at 1963 Sebring, a quick fix is to copy the cobra289_gy_63.tyr file from the AC Shelby Cobra file directory to the Triumph TR-4 file directory. Then change the line in COUP_TRMPH_TR4.HDC file that reads TireBrand=63_tr4 to TireBrand=cobra289_gy_63.TYR.
