The report begins with a Servoz that get hurried with the woman timekeeper . Talks have relatively no interest
Then, when Beltoise stops, we learn that the FVA water temp after Servoz stop reach 90°
Beltoise to the manager: "you shld change the steering wheel, or change the spoke axis, as I can 't see the water temperature "
then the journalist ask Servoz :
"why Beltoise is testing your car ?
because he want to do a tire test"
( he was testing Michelins)
Then Beltoise stop and says about them : " it is not bad" " It is not bad "
... then " but I think they are a little bit too wide at the back "
Claude Leguezec, that was the team manager ask Beltoise :
" Do you want to test the Good Year ?
Then they fit the Good Year
Then the drivers talk, seated on the grass :
Beltoise to Servoz :
-" What lap time do you get with the Michelin ?
- 2'17" and something ..
someone told him : 2'17"5
- yes ... but with the Good Year, 2'19"5 or 7, I think ...
Why did you stop when I was towing you ?
Servoz answer isn't clear, and Beltoise remind him that they did 3 laps together, and if he wldn't have stop,Servoz time wld have been better
then Beltoise explain the advantage of 4 men together in a pack ( see post above)
Servoz says he want to go back to the Michelins
Beltoise then :
"Yesterday, once the engine was set correctly, we tried the gear ratios. But on the snd day of practice,we did some tyres testing, but on that day, the only thing you have to do is manage slipstreaming.
If you are better than a competitor on a corner, you will get a gain of 3 meters at best, and if he regain it, he is better than you . But with slipstreaming, you can gain 50 meters in a single lap on him ! So the problem of all this is the slipstreaming. "
The journalist : "so it is not a matter of virtuosity, but luck ..."
Beltoise : " not so much ...
journalist : " Reims is a lottery
Beltoise : " .... you need courage.. because the cars are moving a lot on the straights ... and when you brake, you need to have room for 50 centimeters on each side .Under braking, the car front train moves roughly 50 cm left and right ... Three cars together are under braking in front, and the track width is only 7/ 8 meters.....or 9 at max......and this is very dangerous, because our wheels are separated by only few centimeters, and you are at more than 250 km / h".
then the journalist ask what are the main risky points of the track
Beltoise : " the very fast Dunlop curve that is flat out ...and for sure the two corners in the background "
.... " and that's here that experience helps a lot,the more you run fast curves, the more you get the feeling that they are more and more slow... And finally, when you think that they are slow, going through at 200 km/h, that's means then you are ready "
on the next briefing, we learn Beltoise decide finally to race on Dunlops ! ( I remember Beltoise saying at the Formula 2 season end that the fact Matra work team didn't get a contract with a tire manufacturer, had been finally at a disadvantage )
Beltoise : I will race with a longer first gear
Servoz : " me ,too "
They had a 13/35 and they ask a 14/34
Servoz : " I will race with the Michelin, and I want a tire pressure at Two kilos, front and rear "
finally, raceday, they DNF ... and after a talk, they wonder if the cause is a rich fuel / air mixture, or a poor fuel/air mix ...
