So this evening, news broke out that the abomination that is called the 'halo' will be introduced for next year.

https://www.formula1...d-for-2018.html

If you'll excuse me, I'm off making jokes about how the view rates will drop next year.

Maybe they should drive at 30 mph form now on, just to be safe!

But seriously, this is sad. Open wheels/cockpits are a essential part of Formula 1.
I was just starting to think F1 was going to be better when the made the cars and tyres better for 2017, but this just kills it again.

I still have hope that they will roll this back after a few races, since F1 is now owned by Americans. They know what viewers and fans want; it's not this halo thing.

As far as I am aware, it looks like F1 are going for the Red Bull design cockpit screen and not the halo.
The one I prefered was similiar to the RB screen but just positioned in front of the drivers cockpit and on the nose panel, finishing with a little lip, before coming to the cockpit opening and acting like a deflector shield. But I can't seem to find any images of it. It was basically like a front cockpit shield.

I am aware of the purists damnation of this, tend to agree and would love it not to happen, but unfortunately it is. Well for at least one season anyway,up until they find an alternative or go back to pure form. Which in this day and age, with H&S will probably never happen.

I feel though we have got to give it a chance,as we know from past exploits in F1/GP,we mumbled and grumbled over helmets, seat belts, aerofoil and many other innovations.

In a nutshell we'll have to get used to it, because at the end of the day, driver safety is paramount. How many incidents do we want, like Massa's at Hungary or even the sad fatality of Henry Surtees at Brands.

TP 😐

"How many incidents do we want like Massa's at Hungary or even the sad fatality of Henry Surtees at Brands."

We don't want anymore accidents, that's for sure. The list of dead and badly injured is clearly disgusting.

But it doesn't change the fact that F1 is dead long long time ago...

I feel it is not dead but certainly needs some sort of change, boost or kick up the xxx for certain.

Liberty media and Co are trying to do that in a proactive way. Something Bernie failed to do. They are already trying to promote and develop more fan interaction and I know from a recent interview, with Ross Brawn, that they are trying to find more ways to improve the racing,to make it more competitive. For which I have been more than excited this year with Mercedes and Ferrari fighting for the title. It just needs more teams in the mix so to speak. That could be RB if they sorted out their reliability.
We also need more teams on the grid and a way to have more parity in the sport.

No I am certainly not giving up on F1. I am an avid fan and viewer and prepared to give it more chance to develop for the better and the benefit of the doubt. Let's not kick it whilst it is down, but try to embrace it's future in motorsport.

TP 😃

Apologies from my first post and gp yannick. Plus all !!
After further research It is the ugly halo to be introduced and not the RB screen shield. Although I think that RB screen would be better,as the ugly halo could potentially obstruct the drivers view and make things worse. According to reports,Vettels testing, with the halo at Silverstone, sent him in a dizzy spin.
Plus there are the implications of its safety and difficulty, when a driver wants to get out of the car.

My mistake. But still let's give it a chance. Maybe after more research they can come up with something much better ?

TP 😏

Three new nifty spots for premium value adverts, hm...
Sure that's not the #1 reason for the halo, or is "safety," as seems often the case, a coincidental good excuse?

Really think a full clear canopy would be a better idea and in an emergency might allow quicker driver exit.

And the Shield that Vettel tested and said it distort the visual and push forward the head at high speed so it was put away for the Halo.

With the Halo version there will be many more excuses for 'coming together'.  Those that now say "I didn't see him there" will be saying it much more often.

Sort of surprised they relied only on Vettel's opinion.
Surely that's not the case unless they wanted to eliminate an alternative.

Maybe some variation from military or sport aviation canopies would have better result?
Red Bull sponsors airplane racing also btw.
Planes pass thru pylons with few inches to spare.
Wonder how much distortion is tolerated there?

Anyway jus' sayin.'

Really, the Canopy/Aeroscreen/Shield has a much more classic feeling to it, flying straight in the face of those dipshits that say "OPEN COCKPITS HAVE NO GLASSES!!!!!"
Instead, we got the flip-flop.
