yes this topic is precisely to launch ideas, then we create a group to finally develop something definitive.

my points system is based on the ratio of the 60s,

the 1st has 1/3 more points than the 2nd place and 1/3 more than 3rd place ( 9-6-4)

if you only have two servers the ratio would be ..... 86,57,38,37,36,35,34,33.....

Lord's ideas about scheduling seem appropriate, (post #40).

Why are there various proposals about points?
What "issues" are there?

Top 30% earn points? It could be 40%.
Or could be points earned among all entries for laps completed regardless of place?
Points for pole, fastest lap, points for most advanced from grid, most advanced during race?
Points for top finishers by marque?

How would a point system encourage entry and participation?

If the option is to award points as they were historically in r/l, why is this concerning in this case?

nothing too serious, just an isolated idea,
can be only 9 6 4 3 2 1
an idea about a participation of 3 servers, 30 40 pilots, with a 70% finish in the race

while in the 1960s the index of mechanical problems was high.

If there is points incentive to continue and finish it could make for better races?

IRL, probably the correlation of significance to point systems is the size of the prize and how it is distributed.
This will not likely be the case unless it is agreed to accept donated modest or commemorative contributions to the purse.

With no respective purse the point system could be freed up to represent a broader reflection of the event, such as described in my recent post above.

Some race sponsors pay show-up money and for laps completed in the main event...the GPL 2018 WC could pay for that with points instead of cash.

My main concern is what how you combine two races into 1 result. Assuming we'd split the field by FP laptimes, the second split is going to be the slower one. So awarding the same amount of points as the first would be unfair in my opinion since the winner of the second split would most likely not make the podium in the first. That's where the whole thought process started for me.I'm happy with 9-6-4-3-2-1 & 1 for fastest lap. Just not sure how to award them across multiple splits.

Not understanding the two races into one result idea.
This is because...?

I assume you're having 7 races because of the 7 cars? How about this so you can run 11 races and use all the track.

For the first 7 races, you have to use a different car. After that, you can pick any car as long as you haven't scored any points with it.

This comes from the assumption that grids can be larger than 19 cars. Which leads to the question how do you split 20+ cars in a fair way. I've suggested using laptimes as the metric. Based on this you'd end up with grids sorted by speed. Now it seems unfair to me to award the same amount of points to the same place on a slower gird than a faster one. So some way of putting performances across grids in perspective would be nice.

Is there a number of entries for a single race that offers a better chance of having no technical issues?
Seems less than max would have less issues, but maybe size of the field doesn't matter?

It is the responsibility of the organizers to establish a system of qualifying that yields the number of entries in the final that they determine is appropriate.

Given that, after qualifying there should be no instance of having 20 entries for a 19 position grid.

But maybe I still don't understand?

Back in the day raced cardboard boats. Typically there were a hundred or more entries and the entire event would take place in a few hours. As I recall, positions in the qualifying races were set by drawing and the 1st and 2nd, maybe 3rd place finishers in each heat race advanced to the next level.

Slots in the semi-final and final were also reserved for best times, so a competitor could post a great time in an early qualifying race and secure a spot in the final without continuing thru the elimination events.

This happened for us one time when in the first race we posted 3rd fastest time overall and that got us in the final...where we DNF'd at the start with a broken oar.

This is exactly what we are doing here. Maybe not in a heat format but it boils down to the same thing.

Like the idea of using the 67 F1s to celebrate Grand Prix Legends birthday with a World Cup event.

A lot has changed tho and probably entrants will use the latest versions of the cars rather than the CD versions.

The same could be done with track selection by using tracks that celebrate the work of artists and editors over the past 20 years.

Possible World Cup tracks?
(assuming they work great on-line).

Spa67
Clermont-Ferrand
Dunrod
Road America
Monza10K
Brands
Panchine?
Machwerk?
Cerne's Wood?

My latest proposal was on Febr 13. Meanwhile I ran out of free time, and I could be hardly available for GPL until June... :(

Grand Prix Legends 20th Anniversary Festival
a series of events from September 2018 to December 2018

Servers
- each league should host three heats
- mandatory online loose grids for all servers
- password protected events
- available servers? GPLBrasil, Mybroga, LBGPL, F1Legends, UKGPL, GPLRACER, ADC ?, oAo ?, other ?
- servers must be selected till April 30

Teams
- 3 drivers per team (same drivers for the whole competition)
- any number of teams from the same league (each denoted as A/B/C/D/etc. like “Team Groundhog A, Team Groundhog B”)
- non-regular league drivers could team up as Privateers
- teams must define which three servers will they race in the heats – it means that there would be only one home race for everyone, except Team Privateers
- applications accepted till July 31

Heats
- anytime during September-October - dates and start times must be announced till the end of July
- realistic damage, 36 fps
- 30 minutes practice
- 3 pro-long races: 2 papy tracks + 1 addon tracks (both selected by local organizer/league admin)
- free car choice but all cars must be used at least once per team
- points like 9-6-4-3-2-1-1-...-1 for all classified driver - 90% of race distance must be completed to be classified
- best two results count for each team, but points are given for both drivers - ie. no gaps in points, if Team A finishes on podium they score 9+6=15 pts (P3 and 4 pts are lost), while Team B best driver finishes 4th and grabs 3 pts.

Semi-finals (2)
- in November - dates and start times must be announced till the end of September
- a maximum of 3 teams from the same league in the semi-final
- realistic damage, 36 fps
- 40 minutes practice
- 1 hour long pro events
- Watkins Glen? - same track for both server
- free car choice but team members cannot drive the same chassis
- points like 9-6-4-3-2-1-1-...-1 (90% of race distance must be completed to be classified)
- all points count
- servers?

Final
- in December - date and start time must be announced till the end of October
- a maximum of 2 teams from the same league in the final
- realistic damage, 36 fps
- 40 minutes practice
- 1 hour long pro event
- Silverstone?
- free car choice but team members cannot drive the same chassis
- points like 9-6-4-3-2-1-1-...-1 (90% of race distance must be completed to be classified)
- all points count
- server?

Prizes
?

As a token of respect to a very special champion, happy to pledge a slightly used copy of Piero Taruffi's The Technique of Motor Racing.
Just let me know where to send it.

On the other hand, maybe any prize beyond a very modest token would be entirely inappropriate, especially given it Grand Prix Legends. For sure would not want to set an unfortunate precedent except perhaps for the 40th birthday.

Maybe a frame-able certificate of participation and achievement suitable for download?

After all the reason to play is to play.

Think the teams idea complicates things.
Maybe I don't understand that part?

If an individual driver championship, if one league is "over-represented" in the final its because they happen to have the quickest drivers on race day...just the way it is.
Any points or prize goes to the driver.

Others should just get better if they want a chance at winning a world class event.

It is a one time in a GPL lifetime festival and birthday celebration, so everyone who enters is a winner forever.

Party party!
