I have a question about potential graphic improvements for GPL. Some days ago I read that there exists freeware re-shading software (e.g. Reshade or its predecessor SweetFX) out there with which improvements/changes of the graphics of allmost all games shall be possible – generic shaders. I installed Reshade in a separate/experimental GPL-installation. And the Reshade window appears in GPL. But I realized that applying Reshade is quite complicated.
Prior I proceed further I post therfore my questions in this forum: has anybody experience with Reshade? Does it work propperly with GPL? Is it worth the effort?

Hello Thomas,

I have got ReShade 4.6.1 to work with GPL in OpenGL v2 about a month ago without any problem.
But I am not using it as I do not see much benefit of it for GPL.
It has some nice effect filters but no real improvement of the graphics itself.

Stefan

Hello Stefan,

thank you for your quick replay to my questions. Sounds like I will not proceed with Reshade.

You are welcome.

I will reactivate ReShade on my GPL installation the next days (is done in some minutes) and take some screenshots of some nice effect filters to give an impression to all what we are talking about. :)

Hi,

I have taken screenshots using the latest
ReShade 4.7.0
https://reshade.me/

ReShade has a ton of effects. Some effects are just funny, but some can sharpen/ improve your picture. But it is hardly visible on screenshots. Therefore I have not taken screenshots of it.

Best is to try for yourself.
It is very easy to install. It only takes 5 minutes.
Just use the ReShade 4.7.0 installer, choose OpenGL and point to your gpl.exe. I haven`t tested but by starting and ending GEM+ and letting it overwrite all .exe files you should be able to patch all gplmod.exe files with ReShade.
I applied it directly to the gplc65.exe.

Attached are just some example screenshots (forum limit is 10 screens).

You can download all 53 screenshots from here:

Some such effects do enhance older games, but be aware the overhead may be unacceptable.  I've tried them in FS9, GTR2, Oblivion, etc., and found in general the frame rate hit outweighed the eye candy (and in some cases the effects appeared overdone even with minimum settings).

That would be my question as well. What is the fps impact on your system running Reshade in its various guises Stefan?

I don`t know. I haven`t tested it.
I am not using ReShade. I just took some screenshots.

Thanks for the screenshots Stefan, I was very curious to see some exemples.

I don't see myself using this to be honest. Some of the filters that only adjust the saturation and contrast are nice though, but I can also do that trough my AMD drivers profiles for all the gpl**.exe's.
