Hi lads,

back when developing the layout for this mod, I originally made a different mainback and credits screen for it. As a team, we decided however to discard those in favour of the ones we actually shipped with the mod. Six months later or so, I thought about releasing them anyways, separately, as someone might still enjoy them and because they are basically 100% finished work and I would feel sorry to abandon them completely. So, have fun, hope you like them ;)

Thank you  Leon, these are so beautiful, is there any way of setting things up so that they would load sequentially ? - either at the time of loading or changing each time the mod is opened

Thanks Paddy :) apologies, I did not understand your request :( could you go a little bit more into detail please? you mean both the mainbacks, alternating between each other?

Apologies Leon, I confused between your screens and the ones posted by Johnny A .at
http://srmz.net/inde...topic=12912&hl=

I was wondering if those could be opened in order one after the other, rather like the way your "Signature block" works, or a different mainback opening each time one opened the GPL XSCMod.,  I greatly like both yours and his but do think that the artistic surpasses the photographic.

(Now I have upset TWO people :hithead: :hithead: :hithead:  )

Just a thought !!!

I wonder if it's possible for one of our clever chaps to get the screens to rotate. Gpl is capable of showing videos in game...such as the newspaper. Also isn't there an option in GEM+ to toggle videos and animations on and off.

Just an idea from a layman.

Considering what has been achieved over the years with GPL I would think something may be possible.

Paul.

Would be very easy to put a .cmd script together, to do this outside the gane. It  could rename a rotating set of menu screens and then invoke either GEM+ or GPL.exe

Need to tailor it though for different players installation/requirements.

I will put an example together.

I've had a look at GEM, and there is a function which allows a program to be run just before GPL.EXE, when you press the GPL green flag button on the GEM screen. It may be possible to write a small program which copies a graphics file from a selection of several stored in a directory somewhere, and copies that to your GPL installation so that it shows up as a new menu background picture. The program could keep track of the last pic it copied, so that they could be copied in sequence. Or there could be a random function built in. You would then have a new menu background every time you started GPL. However, the little test program I used to check this was supposed to wait for a keypress, and this didn't work. I pressed the GPL button in GEM, I saw my "Hello" screen pop up from the extra start-up program, but then, about a second later, GPL started without me pressing a key. It seems that GEM goes ahead and starts GPL anyway, no matter what the start-up program wants to do. If there's no way to pause the start of GPL.EXE, then the extra program might not have enough time to do the file copying before GPL tries to load the menu screen image, and this might cause problems.

I'll keep on experimenting and see if I can get something to work. :crossfingers:

The GPL newspaper rotation stopped working quite a while ago, as I think it used quite an old-fashioned technique for displaying the animation. I think I remember someone having a look at the problem, but I'm not sure if they fixed it. I haven't taken part in a race in GPL for a long time, so I haven't seen the newspaper recently.

The GEM options for turning animations on and off only refer to the pictures shown on the GEM menu (the car set on the left, the track pic in the centre and car on the right). They do not control any animation features inside GPL itself. I think it requires a special image format to see the animations on the GEM menu, and I don't think anyone has created files like that for a long time. Static images are usually used these days. The various menu screens in GPL are always loaded as a static graphics image, and there is no facility for making them rotate. It would take a large amount of patching to introduce new code to make the menus spin, and even if this were possible, IMO I don't think it would add anything to GPL. Would you really want the screen to spin every time you changed from one menu to another? I don't think I would.

Saiph's program would be a good solution.

My idea was "quick and dirty"

A command (.cmd) file in your gpl folder containing the following........

cd layout\SCoptions
copy GTmainbX_01.pbf ..\GTmainbX.pbf
rename GTmainbX_01.pbf GTmainbX_00.pbf
rename GTmainbX_02.pbf GTmainbX_01.pbf
rename GTmainbX_03.pbf GTmainbX_02.pbf
rename GTmainbX_04.pbf GTmainbX_03.pbf
rename GTmainbX_05.pbf GTmainbX_04.pbf
rename GTmainbX_06.pbf GTmainbX_05.pbf
rename GTmainbX_07.pbf GTmainbX_06.pbf
rename GTmainbX_08.pbf GTmainbX_07.pbf
rename GTmainbX_09.pbf GTmainbX_08.pbf
rename GTmainbX_10.pbf GTmainbX_09.pbf
rename GTmainbX_11.pbf GTmainbX_10.pbf
rename GTmainbX_00.pbf GTmainbX_11.pbf
cd ..\..
"x:\path to your gpl install\gplxsc.exe"

This will rotate through 11 SC mainback files named GTmainbx_01 to GTmainbx_11 held in a sub folder called "SCoptions" under the layouts folder.

Then it invoke gplxs exe and you get a rotating set of mainback pictures.

That is a good solution for people who don't need the GEM front end.

"The GPL newspaper rotation stopped working quite a while ago..."

I made a "fix" to eliminate the spinning newspaper graphic, with a direct jump to the race results.
Pavel improved on my fix by changing the color depth of the newspaper images.... which makes the spinning newspaper work again!

Go to Pavel's Post #13 in this topic and D/L his paper.zip archive - http://srmz.net/inde...showtopic=12349

Un-archive the updated layout.dat file to your layout folder.

Aha! I thought I remembered some people working on it! Maybe my brain's not getting so old after all! :D Thanks Greg!
I shall have to try having a race sometime to test it out.
