I've recently started experimenting with painting some carskins. Reading trough the topics here I know the basics and have the tools for converting mips to bmp and painting them in photoshop, And that the game will first look if there are any MIP files and if they aren't any it it will use a DAT file. But some car folders don't have any loose MIP images that I can convert to bmp files.

From what I understand is the DAT files are archive files like RAR and ZIP, that contain a collection of MIP files in a single DAT file.
If that's the case, what sort of tool should I use to get the MIP files of a car that I want to paint?

P.S.
I only edit the carskins for personal use, I don't want to take any credit away from the original creators.

You can use WinMip2B16 or Papybmp to convert files...but you already know that I see.

Thanks, that's excatly what I was looking for. :)

@John Woods, I use WinMip2 for that indeed, works like a charm.

I forgot to mention that I'm having a bit of difficulty with figuring about how to get transparency for wheels etc. When I convert those kind of mips to bmp they have a black background, and when I later load them as mips in my game they also show a solid black background.

PapyBmp is useful for converting some images with tricky transparency or for working with type5 mips.  :)

Yes, I use DooDAT most of the time, sometimes DATman.

You can also use Winmip to extract files , clic on extra/unpack, choice the track/dat to extract. Winmip creates a sub-folder call "unpack". All the files are extracted there...

Ah, searching for PapyBmp I found topics about transparency etc. Looks like there's still a lot to discover for me. :P

Thanks for all the helpful tips! :)
