If you're still using the old rasterizers you may also use print screen key and afterwards paste into a a program like IrfanView or MSpaint.
But if you are e.g. watching a replay and want to do a series of screenshots you need something external.

Just remember to disable it before using graphics software or it will intercept copy/paste commands from them.

Also, you (jgf) mention that you can save either as a .bmp or .jpg. Mine only saves as a .bmp. and I don't see any menu that offers a choice. Even the read-me file says that you can save pictures in a different directory ... but I don't see where that choice is available either. Sooo, any recommendations?

I used the full version of FRAPS, but it does not work properly anymore with Win 10.
The Latest release: Fraps 3.5.99, February 26th, 2013.
I guess it would need a new version to fully work with Win 10.
For Windows 10 I use:
For desktop screenshots I use the Windows "Snipping Tool" that comes with Windows 10.
You can find it under Apps -> Windows Accessories -> Snipping Tool or use the Windows search function.
For ingame screenshots (and video capturing) I juse Bandicam: https://www.bandicam.com
