BACKGROUND:
I can take a virtual bike ride on a GPL track using my bike trainer as follows:
1. make a video of driving around a GPL track at the speed I'd ride around it on my bike
2. ride on my bike trainer while watching the video

(By bike trainer, I mean a regular bicycle mounted on a device that applies friction to the back wheel, e.g. https://fitnessandfr...h-road-bike.jpg)

QUESTION:
To make this more realistic I want to input the grade of the road into my bike trainer, so it applies more friction when I'm going up a hill.  Is there a way to extract the slope of a GPL track so I can input it into my bike trainer?

Thanks

This is the type of thing.

http://veloroutes.or...radecalculator/

Not sure if this covers any GPL tracks, however there may be similar / better tools if you do some digging.

I don't use these tools for track making, so never searched for anything else.

Good luck.

Thanks for the Road America slope graph.  Can you point me to a link where I can find more of these?

Another question - is there a way to make the car invisible so I can image I'm in a human-powered vehicle?

Or equivalently, can I change the camera position such that it's on the front of the car, looking forward?

Failing that, has anyone created a 4 wheel human-powered vehicle (velomobile) for GPL?  (Sometimes race tracks do host velomobile races https://www.youtube....h?v=TC4AC_79fYY)

Thanks!

Will you be riding the course in real time or using a replay ?

You can make an invisible car by making all the textures used invisible but its easier to move the POV or cam depending if in replay or not.

To keep things simple I will use a replay.  I will set up a custom training session on Zwift with each interval of effort set to (approximately) match the slope of the track as a function of time.  Thus the replay and the Zwift custom session will be synchronized.

When I'm riding my bicycle on the trainer, the replay will be playing while the trainer resistance is being adjusted according to the Zwift custom training session.

How can I set the cam so that it is on the front of the car, facing forward?

All cars have their own cam so decide which car you are going to use for the replay.
Go to the car folder and extract the car cam from the .dat ( unless it is already loose. )

To edit the car cam you can use gplcarcam

You can use any of the cams but I suggest using the nose cam and place it 1.5m above the nose facing forward. You will not see the car.

You can get elevation data for gpl tracks using graced.
It will give you a height/distance graph

Be careful on the Monza Banking, it's very steep near the top. Don't want you falling off and hurting yourself. ;)

Funny, i once hooked up my hometrainer to a servo that regulated a pot with arduino.
The pot was connected to a joypad.
That way i was able to drive the circuit on a bike :MTBride:
Getting it to simulate the correct speed wasn't the easiest part though.
In the end it was too much of a hassle so i stopped using it.

Got back on my mountain bike :D

I thought maybe you rode up and down the dikes.  :)

There are parts of the U.S. where it is impossible to kill yourself by jumping off tall objects.  That's because they are so flat that the tallest objects are curbs.  :)
