This only happens during online races and I can't figure out what's causing it.
It's not lag on the entire server, but only on my end.

1. I drive some laps (without any peformance problems).
2. I use Esc + Enter to return to the pits.
3. On the TV screen I can watch other drivers without much lag.
4. I return to the track, game is suddenly capped at 32 fps and freezes every 5 or 6 seconds.
5. Around the freezes all the other opponents briefly dissapear.

At that point the lag becomes permanent, but I'm the only one on the server who has it. The other drivers don't have the lag.
The only 'fix' is to exit the server and rejoin. Sometimes I have to exit the game as well because I get a timed out message when trying to reconnect.

As soon as I rejoin the 36 fps is restored and the lag is gone. (untill it gets triggered again)

(In offline races against the AI I can not reproduce this "32 fps" bug.)

After you returned to pits have you open driver standing at the left? What will happen if main page with track map wil be opened?

I presume you use OpenGLV2

As Pavel says, it depends what you have on the left side opened - best is the track map with little dynamic text

The more text ist written the worse it gets - not the static text wich is a picture, the actual times and names!

The rest is GPU driver related imo

Yes OpenGLV2 indeed.

I also do indeed often have the driver standing page opened while in pits.
Never paid any attention to it compared to lag, but leaving the laptimes chart page open can cause lag? Like in: when the list gets updated while in the pits it can trigger it?

There were only 4 other drivers on the server, but the laptimes kept improving during the session so the chart got updated often.

The problem is the writing of any text, what openGL isn't made for...

The ingame text of Pribluda is no problem (thanks to brr in pribluda.ini + .dll),
but all text in GPL menues make troubles,
in openHardwaremonitor  you see the load increasing when you are opening menues with text!

We need a programmer who could make a new rasterizer for us :unwell:

OR

we find someone who can change the fonts hardcoded in the gpl.exe
or
someone finds these 1997 fonts and makes them anyhow accepted by the system ~ by installing an interpreter..

The strange thing is that I never had this problem until a week ago.
It's not also like the load / lag gradually gets worse, it just goes straight to 32 fps and stay there all the time.

Could it be some sort of sync or timing issue with the server? Because rejoining the server, without restarting the game, fixes the issues.

I don't think so. Because others don't have the problem when they join my GPLRACER server.
Do you have any sync problem with other games, or when you surf the web?

I had this issue a few times and that has costed me a race in the past a couple of times.
I'm adding to what Pavel and Cookie said, I think it has something to do when there is too much text, e.g. when you view the starting grid.

I encounter something similar when you spectate a race on live feed when you go to the qualifying/race tab.
The replay suddenly becomes much more choppy.
Go back to the track map tab, it runs smooth again.

So make sure that you are on that tab and do not have the chat log opened when you want to join the grid when racing online.

IMO Eriks problem besides or after the OGL stutters has to do with GPU driver or CPU falling asleep.

I bet W10 had an update :harumph:

PS

recently I set up a GPL PC for a friend with old AMD HD 5770,
I installed the good 15.7.1 driver and tested all fine 60fps back in grid Spa67.

THEN W10 did some updates and deleted my driver by installing a beta version - result stutterind 23fps at Spa67!!!
Cost me some hours to find the trick to disable W10 device driver updates!!!
Never ever...

Thanks everybody for the tips!

I did some online racing again yesterday, while making sure the trackmap was shown at the pits the entire time.
Luckily I had no 32 fps lag, so that might have been the cause indeed but I don't know for sure.

As to Windows update, I did download version 2004 a couple of days ago.
Beside that I also noticed worse peformance in the menu's overall since I have my new pc with recent AMD drivers (i7 9700K / AMD 5700XT).
The newspaper roll animation and scrolling trough the replay list are extremely choppy. (Bandicam shows something like 10 fps)

On my older pc with an R9 290 and AMD drivers from 2018 the menu scrolling and newspaper animation were always smooth.

I think it's fair to say that OpenGL support on newer AMD gpu/drivers has gotten worse.

Sadly it is the same for Nvidia.

The chat and menu text in connection with our ancient rasterizers problem is the most anyoing thing we have atm with GPL. :(

Erik, you probably know this thread which is also about our text problem:

I remember running into a problem something like this where I could only get 26 – 32 fps, but I never knew what triggered it, if anything.  But I found that playing around with all the confusing parameters in the GPU settings fixed it. This thread below is for nVidia cards, but perhaps you can look at settings that have worked for that GPU

http://srmz.net/inde...=40#entry134359

Also for AMD cards...

https://www.amd.com/...t/kb/faq/dh-012

Regarding GPL, there are some surprising settings that very much hurt GPL's performance, which is annoying when you have a high end card.

I've always had the ingame chat during driving disabled, so I don't know if that would also make it worse.
When someone joins or types a message I always see a small flicker on the top left of the screen, but nothing serious.

I use the exact same gpu settings on both of my systems: 8 x super sampling, 16 x anisotropic filtering (high quality mode) and vsync disabled.
Both are on peformance mode ad well, so the cpu does not downclock either.

So it must be driver related I presume. Shame to hear it's the same for Nvidia as well.

Erik are you using the latest drivers for your mainboard and graphics card? I usually go for the latest drivers for all hardware.

On my new system I have the latest drivers, chipset and gpu.

But for my old pc the 2018 drivers work very well for GPL, so I'd rather not touch them.

Now you made me curious, I started my W10 PC -i34170-RX580

This stupid AMD Radeon driver makes it hard to get in 3D mode ...

Of course this is politics to not let you do what you want, you have to do what they want!

My profile for 69X 60fps, the voltage is allways way too much, I reduce it -0.1V

Oh yes that's the new interface, I don't like it much either. I don't even touch the tuning menu ever, I only use the gaming profiles.

Since your RX 580 was released in 2017 (?) I think it might be worth trying the same drivers that I'm using with my R9 290 (2013). It's version 18.9.3, which was released in october 2018.
