Before the (great!) 1969 F1 mod was made, there may have been (lengthy) discussions between the mod team members about which year would be the best. Therefore my question is: as part of that discussions, have there been any issues being mentioned against doing a mod beyond 1969? Or would it in principle be possible to do more modern F1 mods, e.g. a 1971 mod? Just the idea of it seems very appealing to me. Unlike later years, for 1971 the 9 slots in GPL would just be sufficient.

IMO, nine slots would not be enough to proper simulate a 70 season - at least in a comprehensive way. There was in the 70s an incredible number of entries, each with multiple race-by-race variations: it was the climax of the DFV+Hewland gearbox era, and of plenty of aero ingenuity.
If you don't believe me, take a close look at the F1 Seven mod for F1 Challenge 99-02, which has all the carshapes and liveries, race-by-race, of the 70-5 seasons (in top quality), and 76-9 (with lesser quality).

The amount of work they have put on that mod is astonishing: it took two modding teams and I believe they nearly went crazy after finishing 79. Just imagine modelling all the carshape variations of a Ferrari 312B3 in 73, or of Lotus (which used both the 72 and 76) in 74. On the downside, physics are not as good as they should be (although changing the tyre files helps a great deal to make the cars less grippy and more twitchy).

You'll find more info about the mod here: http://alliance.bond.../f1c_tracks.htm

I thought it was now possible to have a lot more than 9 slots in GPL?

As far as I know Paul Skingley was already experimenting with Turbo cars... but that was many years ago... atm there is no beta development in that area (at least not that I know of).

Doesn`t the 1969 Extra mod already have more than 9 slots?

The 1966 mod has 16 slots, and from what I can remember (vaguely) from discussions at the time, that may not be the maximum!

And to add my 2p-worth, I would love to drive the black-and-gold JPS Lotus 72 from the early 70's. :drool2:

I'm not that interested in going into the 1970s, except for a 1976 mod perhaps.

With the 1950s mod coming out this month I now am most curious to see a 1968 and 1935/'37 mod. I have no idea if I am right but I thought the latter was in the early making??

For the rest I think I'd like to see the remaining Tasman tracks (I do not think we have all of them yet?)
and some of the F2 tracks that are not there yet (Südschleife and non-Championship).

It's ok Pete, GPL mods are not compulsory.

before 69 seems more interesting to me...

1939 - I like the Auto Union Typ D better than Typ C, and W154 is at least as interesting as W125...

1961 - just one word... Sharknose !!! B)

True, but i'd like to drive them. So many now that I won't bother with.

Great to see that the topic generates so much reactions.

Indeed thinking of driving a Lotus 72 is what first triggered the idea.
As said, allowing a few minor historical inaccuracies, 9 slots will allow for a pretty complete 1971 grid (see below). If more slots are available it would only get better.

The order of the cars is modelled after the 1971 French grand prix.
- Lotus 72D
- Ferrari 312B2
- Brabham BT34
- McLaren M19A
- Tyrrell 003
- BRM P160
- March 711
- Matra MS120B
- Surtees TS9

Does this make any sense?

No, why not drive a more modern sim with those cars? They can do it better, because of a better code.

Leave GPL for the classics.

I have mentioned this a thousand times before. But I always wanted to have a classic 50's or 60's motorbike mod.
Similar to gpl, with classic bikes, riders and tracks. I know this is probably impossible to match mod with gpl,but I think someone once mentioned that there was talk of a bike and sidecar mod, back in the day?
Maybe a classic motorbike mod would ideally match up with microprose gp500.If I had modding abilities and permission,I would certainly try the gp500 way 😃

TP 😁
