Early this morning I did some laps with a GPL newbie at Torino in Connaught. In chat he mentioned using the brake assist, but also being able to drive without. As someone who had only experienced the brake assist as a major disadvantage, I was then curious to see how assist compares to no assist.

I was able to shave some time off and push more easily. Whenever tyres locked, they were corrected by the brake assist, the brake fade was significantly lower and the overall capability to slow inside a given distance wasn't impeded.

Is this intended by design?

Interesting! Having raced motorcycles with drum brakes in the 70's I never experienced brake fade as bad (if at all) as in the 55 mod. I kind of think that it is over stated in the mod and if it ca be over-ridden by such a simple measure then there is something wrong somewhere.

That could explain why I have seen quite competitive keyboard times with the 55mod.

Btw, here you have the "official" thread to report 55 mod issues: Bug Report And Fixes.

That's interesting.  We never tested the mod with the Brake Assist feature on...who uses that anyway?  :)

This is one of those bugs that a patch fix won't do any good because if someone wants to cheat, then all they have to do is not use the new patch.  The genie is already out of the bottle.

It's good information for the upcoming 30s and early 50s F1 mods though.  I'll look into how to disable Brake Assist for them.

In 24 years of GPL it never occurred to me to enable braking assist (leads to bad habits).  It's enough trouble to remember, after an evening with GTR2 or rfactor, to let off the throttle when shifting in GPL or n2k3.

Same here. As someone once said, the race is really against yourself.

I'm doing well to finish a race with wheel and pedals, much less finish in the points;  I'm astounded that people can drive this sim via keyboard.
