Knowing Hollywoods' totally trustworthy interest in truth and historical accuracy, the movie probably ends with Carroll Shelby heading off to design and build the Ford 917, and win the World Sportscar Championship for for America for the next 30 years. ;)

Old racingcars on modern race tracks seems off to me.

Well, it's a great story and I'm interested in seeing what they make of it. The P3's look good too :)

The racing movie genre is so bereft of content that even if this isn't historically accurate I still can't wait. Love Bale and Damon. I read "Go Like Hell" a few years ago and it's such a great story.

From the fragments in it the racing scenes look pretty amazing. Though I imagine they're probably done a bit like Rush, unlike when McQueen did Le Mans.

Other promising thing about this film... It has a bloody good director. (Logan was a masterpiece.)

It will be disappointing, but unlike most disappointing films, I will have watched it. 😁

A super Ford vs Ferrari documentary dropped on Netflix this last Friday.
It has some really great footage of the Ford '64 and '65 attack at Le Mans.  Plus, the usual '66 and '67 footage.  Very sharp and clear old film.

Return from the film seen friday night on a large cinema screen, and the first feeling I put here :

Well, the film takes a few distances with history, at least as this history has been told in books, mags and interviews.Fake 330 P4s look from the front and from the rear views (normal, impossible to use genuine originals P3s that where alls destroyed or transformed in P4/ 412P) ), presence of Enzo Ferrari in the stands of Le Mans, refusal of the contract when it is presented to him when it took him several months to answer, and insults, did he say them, even later??( such exageration make for a funny moment, but shld have been replaced with a more credible story...),Cobra Coupe already present at Los Angeles airport in 1963, as well as P4s in the Ferrari workshop, Henry Ford II on board the GT 40 on the runway of Los Angeles airport, GT 40 with a modified front instead of the Ford J for the fatal accident of Ken Miles ect..... ) .

Cars handling and behaviour when they are in pack is quite fanciful, very violent, and  their suspensions moves as road cars, rather than real sport cars protos.Ferrari management and cars spectacular crashes only seen from a caricatural side and its flaws.
McLaren and Amon are completely forgotten!

Actually, it's a Ken Miles tribute film. After all, his family and relatives must be happy to see that thanks to this film, from a long forgotten Ford driver hero status he will become a famous racing driver in the future. He deserved it.
another nice thing is, though never named, the presence of a character playing Phil Remington, one ot the key members of the Le mans conquest with Iacocca and Shelby.

All this did not prevent me from having a very good time, I love the character of Ken Miles and the rendering of American and Italian mentalities, by small flashes, are quite well put on the screen. There were a lot of young people in the Cinema and if it makes them interested in the racing cars of the 60s, that's enough for the movie to fulfill the target we maybe expect at SRMZ.
Enough to go see this movie for the story around a motor racing preparation and event, and human relations and conflicts, mainly between Shelby and Ken Miles. Shows how much Shelby respected and was impressed by Miles.Don't expect too much about the pure motor racing, and you'll have an entertaining moment.
I found the first racing scenes shot at  Willow Springs the most immersives, and discovering this track around its wild location is worth seeing the movie alone.Returning home, it will invite us to play GPL and do some laps on this very special track.Good choice in using that track as the Riverside replacement, seems the surrounding haven't changed much since the sixties !!
.
conclusion: John Frankenheimer Grand Prix, again and again, with its flaws and great rushes,  is not in danger, for me it remains the reference

Michel, thank you for this wonderful little review of the movie.  :)

I have been feeling badly with a really sore lower back.  Hopefully I will feel good enough to go out and see the movie with my son tomorrow.

Thanks for the heads up Greg, will watch it on Netflix before I go to see "Le Mans '66" (as "Ford vs Ferrari" is called over here) on Tuesday.

Thanks Michel for the review, As a Sutton Coldfield/Birmingham resident, I'm looking forward to seeing how Ken Miles is portrayed (although I am prepared to wince a bit at Bale's accent).

You won't be disappointed.Ken Miles has all the attitudes and reactions of a pure genuine down to earth  hero . The real winner of the Le Mans 1966 edition, as well as Bale, that I have never seen on a film, the best actor in the movie, in my opinion.

(Post above a little edited and completed )

forgot : New Zealanders won't like not only  the missing references of McLaren, Amon but also Ken Miles partner, Denny Hulme.  Did Ken Miles raced alone ?

Talking of kiwis, does someone know what happened to the movie around Bruce McLaren life ?

I watched Grand Prix as a kid, long way before imagining GPL. and with the vision of a 70s F1 child, and still love it, one of the few DVDs that I own.
Would you mind pointing out what it got correctly and not? Just for learning purposes

If you really want to get into all the details about Grand Prix, here is the link to Autosport's Nostalgia forum which has been actively examining the movie for the last 19 years!  :)
