Hello Marco, Wow that sounds just like what has happened to me!  I could never figure why it worked fine then just quit without any changes being made. I looked at the procedure and will study it further and give it a try, thanks so much for finding this.
No problem,I hope it helps!

I did check online problems with changing the settings and there were a lot of posts on Microsoft's help site with people being unable to change the read only settings and I found no real solution there, it seems to be mostly on Windows 8 on up, and I did run the CROA program per the read me file and while it did find and change a couple items, I still find " read only " ticked when I check most folders and when I uncheck them and click ok it says it will apply changes to all folders, I see the green progress bar running but when I recheck the folder it still has the read only box checked! that is the same issue I found all the complaints about on Windows site.  I can post an image if needed but it would just show the box checked and unchecked  it does not save the changes I make.

There ares 3 states of the read only check box:
1. Contains solid black rectangle 'inside' the check box == NOT read only
2. Empty check box == NOT read only
3. Contains check mark  == read only

Creates much confusion and have not seen explanation as to why MS did it that way.

In Windows versions since 7 there is no 'Read-only' setting for folders.  This is where you see the solid black rectangle.
Files can either be Read-only (checked) or Not Read-only (un-checked).
Certain files can have this attribute checked or un-checked ONLY when the user has administrator rights.
