I don't know, if any of you here, play or have played, old naval games, from around the nineties.

I have the disc, somewhere, of an old naval game, that I have lost and just can't seem to find it. Unfortunately, I can't remember, the title. Only a few bits about it and some lovely fond memories, back in the day. I had the game on an old desktop pc system, with CRT monitor, running Windows 98 OS. So I dont  think it was an old dos game. I have also posted this question, on naval war site forums, with no success. So hopefully, someone here, can jog my memory. Even though it's not race SIM related

What I remember is the opening video and the game is from the Spanish Armada history of war. On the video, I remember a sailor looking out, from top of the crows nest mast, spotting the enemy. Shouting danger the scene moved to a sea battle and below deck, with sailors loading and firing cannon shots, towards the enemy ship. Then a shot from the enemy destroyed the first ship, it sunk and the opening video finished.

As far as game play, it was top down view, with ships moving on a table top type ocean. In the corner was a small map, where you could detect enemies, by colour.

I think you could be, any major nation and for example, if you were the British, you fought and battled the Spanish and French navy. If I remember the countries names were not real, but fictitious, with similiarities.

As a nation you sailed into an hostile ocean, like the Atlantic and crossed over to an American and Caribbean type land mass, collecting goods, trading items and capturing slaves, for your ship's crew. You obviously got attacked by the enemy, as well as independent nations, such as American and Dutch like countries, including pirates of the sea.

To take a coastal port or land mass, you had to defeat it's onshore stronghold and cannon bases, lined along the coast.

You could fire different ammunition, like cannon ball and grapeshot as well as repairing your ship's hull and sails, in a friendly port.

Well that's all, I'm afraid, that I can remember for now. Hope some of you can shed some light on this mystery. As I say I have asked other online forums and studied Wiki type lists, of old naval games, with no concrete findings.

It is really annoying and frustrating not knowing. Unless I can miraculously find the old disc, amongst my pile of games 🤔

Thanks all 👍

Hi TP,

The only ones I can think of is Sid Meier's Pirates and Sea Dogs. But they are well known.

Greetings, Marcel

If it's one of Sid Meir's "Pirates!" series, those are still available as downloads. I purchased one of the later releases of "Pirates!" for something like $2. I have yet to install it, but it looks like an entertaining series.

Thanks Marcel and Andre, for your info and leads.

I have the SM Pirate games, and various others, like age of sail 1&2 including sea dogs. But unfortunately no match.

The plot thickens 🤔

Age of Sail (1996)/Age of Sail 2 (2001) by TalonSoft?

(I just Googled for "PC naval warfare games" and although a lot of games came up, these seemed to be the only two which fitted the release dates and time period covered.)

Thanks guys again.

Still no further.

Thought it could be age of sail, but no.

Have a few of those games on webfoot link.

Really strange and annoying, this one. Guess that's life 🤔 Maybe, one day, I'll remember the title, or even better, find the game disc 😁

Did a little bit of investigation, and it looks like ToW is having new life pumped into it with a total remake and makeovers.

Check it out!

So, I have got the Tides of War game and pretty cheap off eBay too (still can't find old disc)

Installed, for the moment, on my Windows 10 pc. With a bit of tweaking, it runs smart. Oh my goodness, the old memories have returned 😁😁

Also re-installed Seadogs and imperialism 2. Wow unbelievable.

Thanks all again 👍👍
