Hi ,

as we now have a serious competitor in sound editing ( good work bingo !  :clap2: ) , I should post my current Cooper Maserati V12 sound.
It is on my hd since a long time, but other projects and some technical problems with the file avoided to finish it.
You get the reverence recording of Rindt at Spa in the Cooper and the still unfinished sound.
Even if it is unfinished it makes a lot of fun using it especially at Spa.

This sound is really good!  :thumbup:  :clap2:
I have no idea how you got rid of the huge amount of wind noise on the recording (Are you a wizard?  :lol: ) - I tried using equaliser settings but could only get so far.
My version is more of a movie style sound really, so it might be slightly worse sounding when sitting still - yours is a much clearer, more engine biased sound.

I can't decide which sound to use now!  :D

One thing though, at that time the drivers were wearing a helmet and had cotton wool in the ears, i think they heard muffled sounds.

I'd love to hear something similar in my headphones :)

All sounds are made at 5200rpm in the app.ini. No change is needed because I always look on the right pitch for the sounds.

Of course it should be possible to make the sounds a bit more muffled or like covered by helmets and cotton wool, but I doubt the effect is that
strong. I always use modern ear plugs to protect my ears when I am driving my bike. The most filtered noises are wind noises and while my engine is
noticeable muffled it keeps all sound features compared to non protected ears.
The current Cooper beta sound must be finished with less distortions and will get more muffled. The problem is, if You decrease the frequenses that
makes the distortions, the sounds character changes too much. It needs very careful adjustment witch will be no easy job.
In addition to that I always think about a full soundset with files that have similar properties. I believe it is not good to care only about the single file
You are working on ; it also needs to get them working together.

A special problem are the headphones. All recording of the GPL real life counterparts, even the best recordings, have a lot of sub noises and distortions I am not able to
delete. Those cars sounds never get recorded in a sound studio. But headphones discover every little fault in the sound and primarily distortions or hiss noises.

One solution should be to overlay the unwished noises with the wind.wav. I guess it may work and I am busy on that idea.
Another solution may also be to take some cotton wool or modern earplugs if headphones must be used for GPL. It sounds like a joke, but GPL is a simulation.
So why not ?  :D

I tried to muffle the cov.wav in a short attempt. Maybe its a little bit better for headphones.

Gday guys, Im wanting to give the Thundercars engine sounds a bit more beef so im wondering if anyone could convert these 2 engine sounds from .m4a file to a useable gpl file. I have no idea how to do it myself but i could learn (try to, im not real computer savy) if someone points me to a "How To" web page.
The 1 labled HG is a tuff street car, probly Holden 308ci V8 or a small block Chev (the 350ci V8 is very popular here in Australia).
The Craig Lowndes sound file is an V8 Supercar (Aussie touring car) all handmade & about 307ci, I think, may be wrong on that.

This is true with nearly all sims, but most people expect/prefer to hear the external sound when driving.  A more correct sound is easily achieved using a low-pass filter with about a 12dB/octave rolloff above 2-3kHz (the rolloff point will determine how muffled the sound becomes, 1.5-2k for a modern full-face helmet, higher for older styles ...basically adjust for what you like).  In sims with misfire sounds those also need to be subdued but the procedure is different since the spectrum is less important than the waveshape, fortunately these are small, easily edited files;  reduce the dynamic range and rise time of the signal so the "pop" sound becomes more of a "thump".

You are welcome to edit the sound files as You described in Your posting.

I will stick to the on board recordings without muffled sounds.
I don't use extern recordings for sound editing, only onboard recordings.
It is difficult enough to give them the in-cabin character as it is needed for sportscars or the
"open" sound witch corresponds to the wind noises in roofless cars.

We should reproduce the cars sounds as they are. No one would like to see a dark cockpit only because most drivers use
sun-glasses or dark shields on the helmets when they are racing. So why should we make the sound covered by helmets or earplugs ?

Imho the only reason to muffle the sounds is to respect the headphone users.

I guess that's very succeptable to the user of the sim.
I believe there was an overlay made with a goggle look(way back) which would obscure parts of the in cockpit view so you would see it as if you where wearing goggles ;) Harldy realistic because in real life you where able to look down on the dash and read your gauges.
It could be that users which have the ir look tool (i don't know what it's called but it follows your head movement) wouldn't mind because they can look around. Although i'm not sure if look up/down is possible :think: But i believe the overlay didn't cover that much so you still could read the gauges. Hey it's been a while so alzheimer is playing up again.

The same counts for people wanting a 67mod having all the proper cars and drivers of that season.
For me the 67 as it is will do just fine.

I'm not that anal on details like that so i appreciate your sound sets as being as good/great as it needs to be :)

The Cooper V12 sound made of the recording Rindt at Spa really forces us to think about damping the distortions.
I am also not happy with the distortions, but with the secondly posted file headphone users hopefully have it a bit
more comfortable. However I will try to improve it and will always be thankful for Your helpful suggestions.

And thx for the good wishes for my birthday. I'm pleased to go out now for dinner with my family.

actually i agree with all of the above. and would say, if i wanted to have the muffled sounds, i put pop some plugs in my ears, get me a period helmet and wear some period goggles. that way i get the sound as it should have been heard by the driver, the view as it should have been (i can still turn my head to look at the screens)...

but not everybody wants to do that, for some the "plain" sound and graphics is plenty enough. now if i had a cockpit like remco, i would want to go the full monty for full immersion, but since i don't have that...

oh ok, and this really is the last coherent post, the wine is breathing already :D

Now it is time to post my current Ferrari 312 sound for the 66 F1 Ferrari 312.
If You like, take it also for the 67 312.
There shouldn't be a great difference between the cars of those seasons.
You'll get my favourite file and may be one that is better for headphone users, witch is muffeld.

Don't expect to hear all of this glorious sinfonia. For sure the Ferrari F1 V12 is the most beautiful and difficult to edit engine sound of all.

Mike Parkes' recording was made during a lazy lap at Monza. The real pitch is a little bit higher than Parkes revs the engine.
Also the acceleration isn't race like.
The inertia of the GPL simulated engines is much lower than irl. This leads to different immersion while You hear the sound.
I tested it with GPLshift and clutch. This is the way to go.
If i try to simulate the lap of Parkes at Monza witch smooth acceleration, using clutch and "manuel" throttle blib, the immersion of the sound
is quite good. You may have not the best results if You use to play GPL with the default shifting and throttle blib.

On fast and long tracks like Monza the engine will accelerate not as fast as on tracks like Monaco due to long gearing settings. This takes major influence on the perception of sounds. But we only have good onboard recordings of the F312 from Monza.

I am still working on files that may work also on shorter tracks with faster acceleration, but it is not easy to get it like we want it for all circumstances.
