Gents,

I'm in the middle of a resurgence of interest in the Auto Unions right now and really want to drive them.
The only sim I've ever had is Gpl which has fulfilled my needs thus far but the 30's mod for it could be years away so I'm considering R Factor.

I've had a bit of a trawl round to find out more but still need to ask:

1, for the 37 mod do I need Rfactor 1 or 2?

2, are there suitable period tracks available?

3, in the blurb on the Rfactor site it only mentioned keyboard or joystick, surely you can use a wheel?

4, Download or try to get the disc?

5, any tips for install/configuring?

Ultimately the question is...is it worth the cost/effort?

Any thoughts welcome.

Definitely its an awesome mod.To answer your questions, heres my view.

1. R factor 1
2. Lot of great historical  tracks which are suitable, plus many of the GPL tracks have been converted.
3. Definitely wheel, Logitech DFGT, G25, G27 etc. currently Im using a Fanatec wheel.
4. If you download, you get to try it free for an hour. I just bought the disc, which was easier for me if I had to reinstall on a different rig, without having to renew the license.
5. You'll want to have several different installs on your computer, for different series. Be sure to install it to  C:\ program files, not C:\program files (x86). Also make sure to run everything as Administrator, with compatability windows xp.

Definitley worth the time and effort, also you will want to install the real feel plugin. It will enhance the force feedback experience.
Any more questions just let me know.

Thanks Russ!

Very helpful tips, just what I was after. Good point about getting the disc therefore not having to renew the licence.
Thanks also for the pm, I will give it a look.

Hopefully over the next few days I can pick up a disc on ebay UK, there are a few special Sauber editions on there now, I take it they will be fine to get the game up and running.

If I get stuck I'll be back with some more noob questions.

Thanks again,

Burt

Glad to be of help. Folk here have been very helpful, and in the end its not so much about the game but about the friends we make from all over the world.Don't hesitate to ask for help, someone will always have the answer.

I think if you want to drive in the 30's although the physics aren't the best Spirit of Speed 1937 is the way to go.
The tracks in rfactor aren't very historically accurate in my opinion.
I just don't like driving around tracks like the Nurburgring or Rouen with armco and modern scenery everywhere.

Agree with rtc on 1,2 and 3

ISI now has an own distribution method that does not rely on trymedia, so the reactivation is much simpler than previously. Every time I needed any support it was fast and nice.

Download rfactor lite for the additional installs, one for each mod

I agree, glad you brought that up, forgot about them getting rid of trymedia, also rf lite is great for multiple installs. But I've heard some mods need the full sounds package.Occasionally a file can get corrupted, by having multiple installs, you won't lose everything.

Thanks for the input guys,

I think I will only be using the 37 mod, I have no interest in modern racing and my 60's racing is covered by Gpl so I guess I will only have the one install.

Never heard of Spirit of Speed, will look it up.

Hope to make time next week to get this up and running.

Guys,

Finally got round to getting a disc and after very few problems have the game up and running. Thanks again for the guidance.

A few further questions:

1, As I am only running the 37 mod do I need to bother with patches (1255 I think it said on  RFactor central) everything works fine without it as far as I can see.

2, In GPL you can look left and right (very handy during races), can't see anything like that in rfactor, there's something about changing to wider pov but just wondering if there's anything that's been added after release?

3, I downloaded a few suitable ie: no armco etc tracks like Bremgarten, Donington 37, Grenzlandring. Anyone know of others that would be period suitable? Wasn't there a 67 Spa available for RF for instance?

4, One other thing, I noticed on youtube an in race vid of an RF Auto Union with very authentic belches of smoke from the exhausts, is this an addon?
I turned up details/effects up to max and now have occasional flames and small puffs of smoke but not the full belches just like on the real life footage.
If anyone has an idea for this I would be very grateful.

So, it's been great fun to actually, well virtually, drive these beasts I have been obsessed with for so long. Blip the throttle constantly and for the love of god don't touch the brake.....ever, unless you like hedges.

Great fun.

Any advice welcome.

Burt

1.- I dont remember what patch 1255 brought to the game. You might back up the whole rF folder and apply the patch and see if it brake anything.
2 - in rF too. You need to set the buttons in the controller tab. If you press both at the same time it will even allow you to look behind, like a 180 degree neck turn :P
3 - You mean, no airborne at Flugplatz??? All original GPL tracks, the f1 75 championship tracks are available. Some might not be "legal" though. If a track was made/converted by motorfx/ken you can trust it. He is a honest fellow, and good at creating those. There are other tracks like Brooklands, Carthague, Reims, Pescara. Nogrip only has legal tracks http://www.nogriprac...at=27&sort=name

Do you use FF?

I guess you know this site : http://www.kolumbus....ellman/main.htm

Thanks Andreh!

I can now see left and right, I didn't scroll down in the controller tab before, doh!
I'm downloading more tracks now, just been round the Ring - scary on thin tyres but exhilarating, Grenzland is super fast.
Can't find Pescara though.

No I've never used ff, and yes the Kolumbus site is very useful, always a good reference.

Still trying to find out how to get the belching smoke from the exhausts....
