Is it normal for GPL to flicker a few times and show the desktop when loading a track at a larger resolution than 640x480. At 640x480, it doesn't flicker and come back to the game but when I play at my normal resolution of 1366x768, it likes to flicker and everything else when loading a track but will also start normally. Is this normal or is it something graphics-wise?

Sounds like an issue with your vid drivers or their settings.  But if everything ultimately works it might be best to "leave well enough alone".

Mine does something like that too - but it does not seem to do any harm to "the finished product".

GPL is an ancient game,
it uses antique video settings in the menu and in the settings,
when it goes to the track the display switches to the original resolution of the monitor - some drivers often crash their PCs in this moment.
This is imo due to the connection of the GPU - BUS - CPU of the mainboard.

Make shure you have the RAM settings in the optimum XML - avoid any extreme settings in the BIOS.

Make a snapshot of HWINFO64 and I try to find your bottleneck

PS

The moment of resolution switching means also a high energy peak for the GPU and PSU so test both with extreme load.
