Bit the bullet for a reinstall (would much rather decipher why my old install doesn't work except for default game).  Delete my old backup, made with earlier installer (which still worked);  make new default with new(er) installer, which works;  copy that to new "main" folder, that works, add GEM, that works, add '55 mod, that works.  Rather than fiddle with what files need to be moved from old "main" folder, decide to just reinstall mods also, then just copy season files, tracks, and setups.  Being insufferably lazy, I decide to download the mods again rather than venture into the wilds of the hall closet for backup disks;  found the F2 mod and '65 mod but not '66 or '69 ...plenty of links to patches and updates but no working links for the mods themselves.  Or have my rheumy old eyes overlooked  the obvious.

Have a look here:
GPL Easy Installation Guide v1.6.1 (English)
http://www.gplworld....tion-guide.html
-> scroll down to "2.3. Download and Installation of GPL Mods"

There you will find working links for all mods.

Thanks!  It's been so long since I previously installed these I'm having to read everything anew.

Is the "GPL_67_Patch.zip" (5.3meg) needed with the newest installer?

What does the 69 Extra mod do?

Probably a stupid question but, as this is the first time I'll have multiple GPL installs (currently three but will soon remove one), is there a way to make GEM default to the install from which it is run?   (So I will not have to remember another setting to change.)

Hi Cookie
Thank you for your hints. To the last item: Switching off some of the pribluda info is what I tried yet. But the very uselful trackposition display for its own slows down the system, not the times or temp displays.
Using different rasterizers will be tried and reported. The GPU (AMD Radeon 6800 series) uses 3 D and AMD optimizations. The fans increase their rpm using GPL remarkably.  My CPU (Intel core i5-2400 x 4 @ 3,1GHz) seems to run at full speed. Know a tool to check that, maybe with windows functionality?
Gonna test your suggestions, thank you!
Alter
Make shure you have "disable intel speedstep" checked in GEM !!!

To control your system I recomment the OpenHardwareMonitor
Run the OHW plot with CPU and GPU load in background when running GPL and look if anyone idles...

I just made a test with very old hardware and pribluda...

So far, so good.  '55, '65, F2, and '69 mods working, pribluda working;  taking the opportunity to weed out some more unused tracks, seasons, and accumulated clutter.  Noticed I now have a "gplc67.exe", what is that?

That's the most up-to-date version of the original 1967 GPL exe. It includes the latest updates such as the long track patch (for Targa, Tandil etc). If you run the 1967 cars from GEM, that's the exe file it will use.

Thanks, Saiph;  I assume then that is also the exe used to create the mod exe files.

No, that is still the gpl.exe
Anything with gplc..exe is a modified version.
