I've been wanting to do something for decades and I think i'm ready to try it now.

I've always wanted to try a Championship without touching the default setup but use it. Nothing can be changed at all. As a matter of fact don't go into the setup menu at all. That will mean you'll have to qualify with full tanks. Since racing GP races it's no handicap for the race. So, i'll do a Championship using long race distance. That way i'll always have way too much fuel for qualifying and the race. The default setups are a bit strange and I don't think one setting is something i'd normally use.

I'll have to do this with the Papy 67 F1 cars because the Historical V2 setups aren't that bad. Not good but not bad. The AI will be untouched and set at 1.0.

This is kind of what someone new to GPL would be faced with. My goal will be a top 10 finish for the Championship. I'm not sure how hard that will be. Hopefully, I can do it without cussing at the setup. That could be the hardest part.

Sounds like climbing Everest using the East Face! Good luck Pete.

Honestly, I would touch just the steering ratio and fuel, and leave everything else untouched as you say. In any case, sounds like fun!

Depending on your driving style the default setups aren't too bad, be sure you are using the patched GPL and its setups though;  V1.0 and its setups, from summer '98, were before the patch, which addressed some ride height and handling issues (those early setups are still floating around).  If memory serves me well (something on which I'd place no bets), the Lotus setups are Kaemmer's, Steve Smith did the BRM and Cooper, the rest from other devs and/or possibly Alison Hine.   FWIW, all were too tail happy for me, though it's been years since I tried them;  perhaps with experience they would feel differently now.

For your experiment I would think it "legal" to tweak controller settings and linearity to match your wheel.  Let us know how it goes.

I've tried that Leon. Before i know it i've changed the whole setup. I'm simulating a noob who doesn't know a thing about setups and just drives the default setup. When i'm done with the championship I want all the setups to still say "default".

I'll be using the Lotus. I really don't want to look at the tire temps and psi after a race. With the camber and psi settings the default setup has I don't think I could handle looking at the results.

I'm using the 1.08 installer, so the patches are up to date. One thingI did change is I took the AI files from the CD. So, the line up is a little different. The same thing for the AI performance file. It's from the CD. Just in case the installer has modified the AI.

Not sure what they were thinking with the psi. 19/22 just doesn't work. Once heated up I have normal temps in the front tires and the rears are burning up at 28-29 psi. The setup itself isn't so bad but the tires don't work. He must have just did hot laps. All the fuel doesn't help the tires either.

one of my earliest leagues was run by John Simmons (wonder if he's still around?)  igps (i think was its title)
we raced every race w/ default settings no matter which car you drove....

What was the general opinion of the setups Bo? I can make it work but I can't push too hard.

Is it even possible to make it trough the hairpin on Monaco with the default setup?

That doesn't matter. It can be over 20-1 with the steering hack and easily get full lock.

I set my wheel for only 1/2 turn for lock to lock. Same as a kart. I can't stand slow steering. My wheel has 900 degrees but I only use 1/2 turn. :)

Pete.. those were early days of online/league racing.
it was the rule to use default (incl full fuel!)  and no one complained.
we all used default. didn't like it? don't race with that league - but no one left :)

I seem to remember a league like that. I think. There were a lot of leagues back then.

Well, I gave it a shot and tried to stay positive about it. I qualified 8th at Kyalami, so it's not like I couldn't meet my goal. The problem is it's just not fun. It's a lot of driving to do if i'm not having fun. I thought the challenge would make it fun but if the driving is annoying I lose interest.

I think trying to win a Championship in the BRM with my setups would be more fun. I may try that.

Which reminds me of Steve Smith's comment on the BRM - one of his favorite cars to drive but he wouldn't want to race it unless everyone else were in one also.  And the six speed gearbox was "like rowing the car around the track".

Don't blame you for abandoning the project though, fun is the reason we play any game/sim.  And GPL is difficult enough as it is.
