Hi guys,

I`ve noticed there are folders named 1024 (Vanwall_1024 for example) in the 55 mod car folders. I take it these are hi res skins? If yes do I just copy them from the 1024 folder and place them in the car folder?

Just checking in case I`ve got this wrong. :)

Those hi-res carskin files are for online racing.  Normally people use the lower res carskins for this.

If, for example, you copy the files within the Vanwall_1024 sub-folder into the main brabham car folder then the sim will use those online carskins.
To return to the lower res carskins, just delete the files that you copied.

Ahh ok, I didn`t realise they were for online racing. It won`t cause any problems of any kind if I use them but only race the AI will it?

Bit of a hi-res man so I`d like to use them as long as it won`t cause any problems. :)

If you only race the AI offline, then online carskins never get loaded into memory.

I`m not 100% sure what you mean by that Greg as in your last reply you said the sim will use the hi-res skins if they are copied into the main Brabham folder?

TJ, the sim will only use the hi-res carskins if you drive online.  If you don't drive online then the hi-res carskins will not be loaded - they will not be needed and will sit in your brabham car folder.

Ahh ok, that`s a bit of a shame as I do like my hi-res stuff but I don`t race online. Anyway, many thanks for clearing that up for me Greg.

Is this info not included in the readme?
I am not on my race PC to check.
If not we should keep in mind to add it in future mods that work the same way.

Stefan, it appears that there is not a mention of the optional hi-res online carskins in the 55Mod ReaMe file.

Guys... if this info was in the readme I wouldn`t have asked about it. I, like anybody else, can miss things in the readme`s but I do always read them before I post although sometimes I will post anyway just to check I have things right. :)

Might be good to have this info in there though just so people know.

Thanks again for the help with it though.

Been thinking a bit about this guys and just wondering why the hi-res skins are only done for online driving and not an option for off-line/driving against the AI?

All of the 55Mod Player and AI carskins are 1024x1024.  Online racing sometimes poses a higher load on the PC. So, the carskins for online usage have usually been standardized at 512x512.  Some Mods give you the 'option' of using higer res 1024x124 carskins for online racing.

Good to know the Player and AI skins are 1024x1024. I thought (obviously wrongly) that because there was a sub folder containing 1024x1024 skins in the main car folder, then that was an option to use hi-res skins and the default skins were lower res.

Thanks again for the explanation Greg. It`s good to know this stuff.

In deed good to know tjc.
I didn't know that either. 😅😳

I guess for online races this could make a big difference on FPS on a lower PC system.

Greg, has this ever been explained in any readme of other mods (I still can't check myself)?

I don't use hires skins for online races (except I had copied them thinking that I need them to see the mod in hires at all).
I rarely race GPL offline. And for online races solid FPS are always more important than eye candy. This applies to GPL and any other game you play online.

Greg (or anyone else who knows), if I have copied the hires 1024 car skins into the appropriate car folder and I watch an online race replay of a server will GPL use the hires 1024 carskins or the 512 ones?
I ask because of eye candy in GPL movies that use an online replay. ;)

Hi Res.

You can use this as a means to test things. The server will record which car to show where, but what you look at is determined by what is in the track folder and what is in the cars folder. When editing skins etc. this is a convenient way to make changes and then view a replay to see how the change looks without needing to have your wheel set up. :)
