How Long Until An Ev Sets The Overall Record At Pikes Peak?
Posted Nov 26 2016 - 01:15 PM
Rhys Millen's EV record is at 8:57.118 . Sebastien Loeb's overall record is 8:13.878 in a Peugeot 208 T16.

My favourite is still Walter Röhrl in 1987 when Pikes Peak was still driven on gravel (10 min. 47 sec.).
Btw: The DiRT Rally simulation has a good version of Pikes Peak (gravel and pavement):

That's a good one. It got very interesting in the 80s when the Europeans arrived. Mouton, Röhrl, and Vatanen made it look possible to break the 10 minute mark. Toyota got close in the mid 90s. I lost interest as surface was changed. Nobody was going to break 10 minutes and future times couldn't be compared to past times.
The electric cars got me interested again. Considering that internal combustion engines lose power as the elevation increases, I figure it's only a matter of time before an electric car sets the fastest time. But that may never happen unless a major manufacturer like Audi or Toyota gets interested in an electric hillclimb car.
Thanks for the link. That's interesting. I'm glad to see the sim still has some gravel on the route. Pikes Peak and the Group B cars make Dirt Rally one of the most interesting new sims to me. If it had the Group B Toyota Celica and Nissan 240RS, I'd have already bought it. I'd rather have the Toyota and Nissan than the Opel and Mazda. I'll eventually buy it though.

Atm DiRT Rally it is 50% off, a good chance.

Here's some pics you and the others here might be interested in seeing. My dad took them. The year was 1976 I believe.
That's Paul Newman in the last shot.

Over the last few years I have been an avid spectator and now a race marshall at an event in my neck of the woods. Namely the Harewood Hill Climb/Race Circuit in the area of West Yorkshire in the Uk.

My dad had shot an old home movie of the race back in the 60's when Bobby Unser dominated and I remember he captured a car powersliding around one of these curves and dropping a rear wheel off the edge and rolling down off the side of the mountain a few hundred feet to a ledge or boulder.

7:57.148. The run seems rather mundane but a good onboard video might be different.
Helicopter footage :
Fan perspective :
Now we just need some new whistle technology to make EVs sound a little more interesting. Or maybe a playing card in the spokes like we used to do with our bicycles would work?
