IIRC several tests were done long time ago regarding this topic.
For what I recall the best results were when all sounds being in mono; is then the system that make them heard at the left or the right depending on the position of the car.
If the other car is on your left, you will hear the sound on your left ear but the sound itself that the car output is a mono emission.

This is a guess, not sure about it but I think Wolfgang mentioned it once; if you have some mono and some other stereo then problems arise.

I think this is true.  GPL's sound system places the sounds at specific directions and distances from the player's head.  Your PC's sound system then tries to replicate that 3D positioning as best as it can.  In theory, multiple speakers situated around the player's head should work better than using only two speakers in front for example.

Because of this, mono sounds should be better than stereo and mixing the two is probably not a good idea.

Friends, I think we solved this problem:

In GPL "Options", reducing the volume to about 25% instead of having it at 100%, solves the problem. At least, in my installation.

Let me know those of you that have the same problem if this solves in your installations too.

Thank you all once again for your support.

Pedro, I did not think to mention what you have found out.  I have always set my in-game Sound Volume to 50%.  Then, I adjust what I hear by setting my speaker volume to the level that fits the time-of-day.  :)

Thanks for making this clear to the community.

Greg, my sound volume was previously at 100%. Don't make sense to me that lowering the general volume could change the relation between the volume of the various sounds, but in fact thats what happened.

I always kept the sound volume  in GPL at its 10% and pump up the wattage of the amplifier since 2000...

Good to know that a simple cure is available!
