:duh: To be fair to the reviewers, I don't think I could be very enthusiastic about a driving game which was being demo'd by such an (let's be diplomatic here... ;) ) "inexperienced" driver. :D

And if they didn't say, a newbie driving keyboard on a 17in CRT and marginal PC even if high end for back then?
a. no calibration
b. worthless setup
c. driving with auto assists?
d. maybe had wheel and pedals
e. FFB?

That it got reviews says something.
If I had to base my opinion only on my first several weeks trying to get it all sorted out definitely would not be here now.

Fun to get a reminder about what it was like when Grand Prix Legends started out.

Who knew?

All my rank times were set with a TSW wheel John. No FFB. It's not really necessary. Even now with a Fanatec wheel I have it set way down to just center the wheel. I don't think it feels real.

i don't think i could enjoy GPL as much if i didn't have FFb!  when i 'feel' the car lift over the jumps, when i feel the curbing/kerbing rumble my wheel and the strength of pulling thru a turn, comes close in my mind to the 'g' forces involved.

Pete,i'd have to say experiment with the settings. i don't know how similar/different fanatec is to my g25, but in my opinion you're missing 1/2 the thrill of what GPL can offer with FFb turned down/off.

I played with it a lot Bo. It feels good on certain things, but if I turn up the settings I can feel it countersteering for me. Not to the point of taking my hands off the wheel and letting it slide through a turn, but I can feel it assisting.

I'm picky about getting any kind of help. It definitely works, but not in the way I want it too. So, I choose to not use it. I have no bias to what others do. Just what I do.

Actually, the FF on the Fanatic is pretty darned good. Maybe too good. ;)

If I had seen this in 1998, first feelings wld have been :

"Poor graphics X undrivable cars X underpowered PC to handle the beast = put all the game back in the box and store it in the attic "

anyone fancy the challenge of translating their comments to english?
my german is not great & they speak too fast for me ;)

from what I did understand:
"one of the best race games of it's time"
"we reviewed it & declared it the most difficult game ever, & it was."
"... you called it a 'game' but it is not a 'game', it is 'work' "
one talks of how the track influences the car & calls it 'great' much to the bewilderment of his colleague
"... a game that can not be less interesting, it is one of the most realistic racing game with formula1 cars from the 60's." - yellow shirt guy is not a fan :D
"it is one of the most realistic driving 'games' & still has a loyal/strong following"

marks out 10?

So their remarks were a lot better than their facial expressions? Oh well, that's good then. But remind me never to play poker against those guys! ;)

Talking of FFB, I thought GPL didn't have force feedback when it launched.... wasn't it patched in with an update later?

Or did I dream it? :sleepy:

In 2000, I used FF with a Logitech Wingman, , an awful steering wheel, still quite not used on the box

Purchased a box edition off a discount rack Dec99 or Jan2000.
Grand Prix Legends would not run at all without patches that were on the Sierra site.
The box edition box does not mention force feedback in the description on the outside or under the info flap. It does designate wheel and pedals as the preferred controller.
Once patched it worked great.
First wheel did not have ffb but it soon broke so got an MSFF wheel and used ffb.
Maybe one of those patches was a ffb patch?

You could already get car skins, tracks, utilities, and all sorts of little bits on-line from user's posting enhancements,

To be fair the clip is supposed to be a lighthearted retrospective 10 years after the magazine tested the game. The clip is from a DVD feature from back in the day when DVDs came bundled with magazines.
