Hello fellow lovers of GPL, after ages I rediscovered me never ending love for GPL. So amazing what has happened here! :wow: Of course I am still the slowest driver around. But who cares if I don't crash into others (because they are already gone). In order to better cope with that misery I am interested in putting myself in something like... maybe an old Fiat 500 with a prancing snap or making that long awaited tractor-mod. Unfortunately these lazy modders did not make something appropriate in twenty years... unbelievable! What are these guys doing all the time? Who needs a real life? :P
Anyway. My question: I found tons of great stuff on track building. But nearly nothing on car-making. I now a little bit about 3d modeling and also work often with cinema4d. Maybe that could help? I would be very grateful if someone could give me a hint which tools are needed. Cheers. Rudolf

Hi Rudolf,

Welcome back to dear old GPL. :)

I too have been learning to do 3D modeling. I`m using 3DS Max 2018 having also used 2014 in the past. The very first model I tried (following a tutorial) was a Fiat 500 from 1969 I think. I got the basic shell of the car done and started adding some "accessories" (headlights/bumpers etc) but I then ran into some problems where certain things didn`t really come together as they should have and the model stalled a little bit. In fact I abandoned that particular model and started a new one which is just at the early stages. I`ve done a few other car modeling tuts and have also started my own models (without following any tuts)

The Ferrari 166MM Barchetta (1948), the Jaguar C-Type (1951) and the Ford Escort MK I RS 1600. All of these are still at the early stages but I really do love the modeling process.

So yeh, I think it would be great if the car modders could put a thread together passing on some of their knowledge and tips etc. Somewhere questions could be asked and help given.

I`m sure those with much more knowledge on car making than me will pop in here and give their opinions on what tools should be used etc.

Cheers

tj :)

To my understanding there are two major steps to getting a 3D car model into GPL.  First is the creation of the model with 3DS Max.  Then, that model must be transformed into a 3DO with as few polygons as possible for GPL to use.  Of course, then there is mapping of textures onto the shape and the creation of these textures.

What about a modelling forum in the forum lists.

For all guides, tips and video links (yt) on how to make cars/tracks and other.

We could get more members into the mod team from it?

Would that be feasible or a bridge too far ðŸĪ”ðŸĪðŸ‘‹ðŸĪŠ

TP: 😁👍

Hi guys, thank you very much for your kind responses and input. Tj: that sounds absolutely intriguing to me. I would really - I mean REALLY! - love to hear some more details on your workflow and which program is used after modeling. As I am on Macs I have to stick to cinema4D for modeling but can switch to Max afterwards (with Bootcamp) it it needed. I am especially interested which program is needed after the modeling stage. For example what makes an .obj to 3do? How about texturing? Which software. I mean it is common to use Winmip and paint on bmp's but you need something different for texturing. Like Bodypaint from Maxon. Greg explained that in brief and hits the nail. For me the problem remains: Even after intensive search I have no idea which software is needed to import the model to GPL. It is rather stunning: So much is well known and documented with tuts and vids from track creation and so on but nothing on cars. Therefore I think twinpotters idea is a great one. That could really encourage some people to try and do some modeling...
Hi Stefan  Who knows... maybe you inspired me so much and I am right now working on something new ???

Rudolf, take a trip over to GPLRepository.... a sister web site.  There you will find like minds who have a love for modding all things GPL - tracks, cars, physics, menus, etc.
Apply to make an account.  I will let the admins know that you are coming.  :)

Ahhhhh.... I see that you are already a member at GPLR - as slowmoe.

Come on by and ask some questions.  :)

Hi Stefan  Who knows... maybe you inspired me so much and I am right now working on something new ???

Hi Rudolph,

My workflow when modeling is very, very basic just now. I`m really only learning to model in Max so I`m still at the stage of trying to get the basic model looking right. Although I have a few different models on the go they are all pretty much at the same stage. Also, my sim/modeling rig is all in boxes at the moment as I`ve just moved home. It`ll be a while before I`m back behind the G25 or doing any more to my models as the room where I`ll be setting it all up again is going to decorated.

So... therefore I`m not sure what program(s) are used after the modeling is complete as I`ve not reached that stage yet and probably won`t for quite a while. I`m sure some of the (much) more experienced guys will answer those questions for you. :)

I`ll be keeping a eye on this thread for sure as I`m sure it`ll contain some really good information on all the modeling etc.

Yeh, as I`ve said, I think TP`s suggestion is really good. It would be amazing to have a car modeling/texturing/getting cars in game thread to be able to ask for advice/help etc. Hopefully that can be set up sometime soon. :)

I also have a thread over at GPLR concerning track updating. Another thing that`ll be on the back burner for a wee while until I get my rig back up and running but I`ve already learned some stuff from asking the experts over there.

These guys are just so knowledgeable and more than anything, very helpful.
