a legend.. an icon of american racers ~ god speed Dan~

photo of Mr.Gurney and a kid, at Indy.. May-'67 the story behind the photo to follow.
back in the day, the area behind the front straight grandstand and the garages, is where you could catch the drivers if you were quick enough, or in this case... Dan comes walking by and i ask if i can get a picture. "SURE!" he says with a big smile. and then extends his hand and asks for my camera! What? (i'm thinking, man i've got pic's from all day in this thing) but its DAN! so i hand my Instamatic over to him~
Then he turns and to some random passer-by and - handing the guy my camera Posted Image :o Dan says "take our picture" ~ he comes back to me, and again extends his hand - i'm a kid, it takes a minute to have the gesture sink in, he wants to shake hands! oh my god.... i clasp his hand (his hand is Huge) and 'snap' the pic is taken.

this guy completely orchestrated the entire moment and you can see the result here

Sad news. RIP Dan.

I am very glad to have seen him at Goodwood a few years back when he was honoured on track with a collection of his racing cars being demonstrated.

That's a cool story Bruce and is a good example of how nice a guy Dan was.

I've got a framed poster of the Gurney Eagle hanging in my man cave (OK, the garage) that is signed by Dan.

With all due respect to Phil Hill and Mario Andretti (yes, I know Mario was born in Italy, but he's an American now), IMHO Dan was the greatest American driver ever.  He won in every class of racing and was the only American to win an F1 race in his own car.  He never won the Indy 500, but his cars did.

And he was a presidential candidate too.  :)

May he rest in peace.
