Oh that is GLORIOUS!!!! Such a shame Duke holds so much vintage racing footage. Wish it was owned by British Pathe or something who are uploading a ton of their stuff to YouTube for free.

I believe Duke were recently bought by Liberty Media, so I expect in time we will start to see more of this pre-1981 footage appearing on the F1TV archives.

Here is a video from 1971:
https://www.youtube....h?v=hmxumthAtyU

It is amazing just how much work they did to the circuit, no wonder they had to move hockenheim for a year!
The amount of bare dirt around the track just shows they worked on basically all of it! I guess it was widenend as well as the bumps removed and things?
As you can see though, a lot of the changes like the humps on döttinger-höhe happened in later years - in fact they were still there in the 73 gp. I wonder when they were removed?

Was the left turn just after you go down the straight past the back of the pits (turn 3? or 2? I don't know its name) ever banked? I have seen videos where it is lighter concrete, much like the betonschleife section (that it would lead into when using that circuit). If so I wonder when it was changed. Maybe the banking was never there, maybe it was removed or what, I'm not sure. It was certainly tarmaced at one point in the early 60s though it seems to me.

One thing that is really interesting to me is that I didn't realise there was a small jump at kesselchen! You can see it from this footage from 69 at about 10:10 : https://www.youtube....h?v=L85RR2RCmoU
In fact i'd never even seen any footage of this part of the circuit pre-changes before. Still not seen oboard of that region.
In fact, they never seemed to have cameras showing the sections from hatzenbach to quiddelbacher-höhe, bergwerk to steilstrecke, hohe acht to eschbach or eiskurve to pflanzgarten 2 (yes i looked all those up :P )
It really makes me long for an accurate historical version of the circuit. I don't think many who go on about the circuit in modern day sims realise quite how much better it used to actually be before all the changes.

You have probably all seen this footage

https://www.youtube....h?v=n6aNnZ4q80s

The annoying part about it for me is, there had to have been, at least at one point, a full onboard lap on film. Because it goes in cuts from Schwedenkreuz to the chicane.

Yes, it cuts way more than that, i wish there was the full clip too.

Same for this one from 62 https://www.youtube....h?v=fkZwGa50eqM
Still, it shows how it was pre-chicane at least, although the camera is point down a bit too much so you don't get a great view.
At least you get to see some more of the start of the track. But it's still missing a lot even collating the two videos.

(Here is the footage in better resolution / bitrate, wow you can see quite a bit more! Sadly the uploader has deliberately sabotaged the video quality - the colour is messed up, filters have been applied and the video is sped up slightly. Still, you can notice things like the road surface on the Döttinger-Höhe straight being terrible in 62 for example! https://www.youtube....h?v=E2m1cDkTLLY )

In reference to this, I guess it was resurfaced in 1959 - see here:
https://www.motorspo...absolute-master

It also says that wippermann was altered - so it looks like there were layout changes other than just the introduction of the chicane in 67.

Quote

Various parts of the circuit had been resurfaced, so that much of the terrors for suspension systems were now removed, and the tricky S-bend at Wippermann had been reshaped and edged with rounded kerb stones.
