Okay, first of all - please stop me (and redirect me) if someone is already working on something similar.

I'll come right out and say it: the current version of Road America is very lacking in the "atmosphere" department.  We're talking what is maybe the greatest road course in the United States.

I don't know much about track editing.  I do know a lot about creating graphics and textures.

Is anyone interested in helping me create an authentic Road America circa 1967?

The current version is featureless - it feels like you're out in California.  The real Road America is heavily wooded and it had/has the feel of a classic European road circuit (think Brands Hatch or the Osterreichring.  It has some truly breathtaking features - signature features.  The long run down into Turn 5 should be through a "tunnel" of thick forest.  It is a beautiful facility.

I've seen versions created for other sims that do the current version justice.  I'd love to see (and help create) a vintage version that does this legendary track justice.

I think the fact that it was a key Can-Am track makes it a great candidate for an overhaul.

Thoughts?

...and yes...first post.  I bought GPL the day it was released in 1998 and it has "traveled" with me from computer to computer throughout the years.  The community that was built around this sim and that continues to support it is truly amazing.  I still love it.  My only other attempt to do any other modding was years ago when I worked with a handful of people to attempt to create a 1967 USAC mod.  It never really went anywhere (though I painted up a ton of skins and so on).  There was some rudimentary editing of 3D models to "mimic" the look of those cars - but this was years before we started seeing such breathtaking work as the 1965 or 1969 mods.  I still probably have the files somewhere!

So...a HUGE thank you to everyone who has contributed in any way to keeping this sim alive and well!

I agree, very glad to see it back on the IndyCar schedule for next year!

Nobody had made a new Road America (Elkhart Lake) yet, but you might want to check out Road Atlanta. Not the same, but still a very nice American track :) . The new Donnybrooke is also very nice.

Road Atlanta is featured in our 1966 Can-Am promotion movie:

Wow! Video looks great! My dad saw those classic Can-Am cars battle at Road America back in that era. He still claims it was some of the best racing he ever saw. Those cars were beasts!

The version of Road Atlanta that exists looks a lot like I'd like Road America to look.

I find it interesting that nobody has done a proper version of it, yet.  The one that is out there is converted over from ICR2, correct?  With some modified graphics?

I look forward to the '66 Can-Am mod...looks like a winner!!

I am working on a new version for a while now.
Last year lost the files and now I just rebuilt them.

Are you skilled on graphics?

Yeah, pretty good.  My regular job requires me to use Photoshop and the rest of the Adobe Creative Suite a lot so I get a lot of practice!  Would be glad (and honored) to pitch in and help.  Let me know what I can do.

Yeah, maybe I could have cropped the photo a little better.  The full size image is hilarious.  It's a Ferrari mechanic pretending to used a large screwdriver to pry a gold tooth out of Baby Face's mouth!

Also - Ginetto - if I can help in any way with the graphics - please PM, as well.  I'd LOVE to lend a hand!

I hope so.  ...while I can definitely help with graphic work...and actual track creation is beyond me.

Ginetto's beta Road America is a very, very fine beginning with an extremely competitive AI.  :)
