The 0.0.0.5 pre-alpha is the very first GPL demo, which was released on April 6th 1998. It ONLY works on Windows 95 and under certain hardware conditions.

Since it's probably been 20 years+ since anyone played it, I thought I'd dust it off and show you the embryo of what is one of the most beloved racing games of all time. It's very interesting since it contains some features that didn't make the final cut.

-------------------------

I'd also like to post some interesting facts and dates that I've uncovered:-

4th April 1997 -- First preview article about GPL  [LINK]

September 1997 -- First trailer video release on a NASCAR Racing 2 expansion pack CD-ROM

January 1998 -- First gameplay video released featuring Matt Sentell and Dave Kaemmer racing online at Monza

6th April 1998 -- GPL demo 0.0.0.5 released

28th August 1998 -- GPL demo updated to include Monza circuit

Early-September 1998 -- Buggy beta version 0.2.0.0 starts circulating on newsgroups. Many players mistake it for the final version of the game.

30th September 1998 -- Official date the GPL arrived on the shelves in the USA.

Interestingly, the Monaco circuit almost didn't make the final cut. Since some of the circuits (e.g. Monaco, Spa, Rouen) featured public roads, they had to see licensing permission from local councils. Monaco in particular was not obliging. Apparently, another believed that the 'realistic portrayal of their streets and towns in GPL' would encourage REAL drivers to race around them at dangerous speeds, so they were reluctant to grant a license. Reading between the lines of 'realistic portrayal', I took this to believe that Papy Spa was purposely made inaccurate for this reason. Now that's a new story that came 20 years too late.

Let's finish off with the first GPL "screenshot" (4/4/1997):

Let's hope three days of editing this video was worth it.

Really well done video.
Entertaining and learned some new stuff.
Worth the effort.

Sure it is a birthday present to Grand Prix Legends.

Cool! Also no mention of Ferrari anywhere, which supports the story that they only provided their license at the last minute. It's interesting that the background for the options menu featuring Dan Gurney and who I believe to be John Love in the Cooper is already blurred to mask the Cooper, so apperantly they'd already given up on the Cooper license at that point.

20 years later, it seems stone age, but instead it was very advance! Very interesting. Thank you.

I'd like to see if there's a version with the menu as portrayed in the Australian review magazines (can't remember the thread, but he's on SRMZ, I'm sure of it!)... :)

Hi, thanks for the very good historic info on GPL demo.

If you don't mind me ask, is there any chance you or anyone could also list the detailed differences between those versions (such as how many tracks and cars are included and which are they, what game modes are playable, etc), and which one of those demo versions are still obtainable now (i have only found the 0.0.0.5 Spanish and 1.0.0.0 English version), as those information could be useful for a full length GPL demo guide (a version of the guide is probably coming some time later). Thanks.

Issues:-
- Only works in Windows 95
- Voodoo2 cards and greater incompatible
- Severe bugs in the black borders while driving
- Able to exit car while driving, but the gameplay won't pause so the car will continue out of control while you browse the menu
- No manual pause function either
- Shift+R works, but car cannot be returned to pit
- Default car is the F3 class, not GP class
- Gear stick's neutral position is the same as 3rd gear.

Missing:-
- Only one mode is available: 'Practice Circuit'
- Lotus 49, Brabham BT24 and Eagle T1G selectable cars
- Unable to change helmet colour
- No AI in the demo, though the files are there.
- The final two drivers in the AI.ini files are listed "??? Unlicensed Driver"
- Team Info screen is disabled
- Monaco is listed as 'TBD' in Best Laps
- No car Setup menu
- Only three damage models available, none selectable. Damage is Off by default.
- No Manual shifting option
- No digital speedo/rev counter visible while driving

- No F2 Replay, F3 Settings and Pause buttons
- No controls or session info in the replay fullscreen mode

Changes 0.0.0.5 vs. 1.0.0.0:-
- Head movement while hitting objects or driving off-tarmac removed
- Menu layout & menu graphics altered
- Some menu options removed
- Lotus player no longer uses Jim Clark skin
- Camera positions, grid positions etc. moved.
- Lotus tyres changed from Goodyear to Firestone
- Generic steering wheel texture as seen from external/rollbar cameras replaced with one matching the one in the car
- Misc track textures replaced

Anything else I missed?

I think this may have been an error since I was using an emulator, not a 'real' PC. I did try to install this demo on a real Windows 98 PC from 1998 and with my old Voodoo2 3000 card installed, but it ran at 3fps (people at the time had the same issue since Voodoo2 and Win98 were not supported by the demo).

So this preAlpha had head movement?

GPL's code has always included a rigid body for the driver's head...even has a specified weight...but there is no code to move it about.  :)

Hi PTRACER, thank you very much for the very detailed information, this is very helpful.
Once I have any update on the demo guide, I'll let you know (probably gonna take a while), and proper credits will be given as well, thanks again!

Doesn't the finished GPL have head movement too? It's more subdued though

I thought that too; very little movement but is there; no?
