Yes, the skins look great, don't they?  I even see Bill Brack's Lotus in there swinging away.  Cool!  :)

Thank you Argyle! Very nice!

Maybe a you could work together with the mod guys to create a full mod with its own F5000 physics?

Thank you Stefan.

There was some activity developing a Formula 5000 mod at one point.  I know that Bob (Royale) did some work developing a potential mod, and possibly others were involved as well.  I don't know far it got because I couldn't get it working with my GPL structure.   But yes, I'd love to have a proper F5000 mod for GPL.  The guys who can do it are just busy with other projects.

Currently I use some of  the 1968/9 cars  as a basis for my carsets.  It looks OK, but it isn't optimal.  I'd love to have McLaren 10A/Bs, Lola T140/142/190's and so on, but creating and editing carshapes is above my level.  There were so many car manufacturers and car models involved in F5000 that it would take a mod like 1969 Extra to  handle all of the different carshapes/cars.

The pleasure I get from it is seeing the old car liveries racing on the tracks of the day.   If a true F5000 mod were developed, I would want to see authentic F5000 carshapes developed.  And tracks.  Most of the tracks (and surprisingly, program covers)  are available for the US Formula A and European F5000 cars, and some of the tracks are available for the Tasman, Canadian Gulf Series and South African Drivers' Championship cars, but there are some holes.  I've been waiting for someone to do Warwick Farm, Pukekohe, Teratonga and Continental Divide for ages.  I guess substitutes could be found in lieu of new tracks though.

The main hurdle I see with a "F5000" mod is that the early Formula 5000 races (1968-71) almost always had a mixture of F5000, F1, F2, Formula B and other cars/engines due to the lack of availability of F5000 cars.  So unless it were possible to have physics for all of those types of cars in one mod, it wouldn't be truly authentic.  But that shouldn't stop a mod based on F5000 physics from being made.

I guess the bottom line is that it would be complicated, but doable.  It's just having the people to do it and lots of time.

Thank you Argyle1968 for your long feedback and the nice new screenshot.

I recently was in contact with Bob (Royale) about the F5000, so now I know a bit more about the project. ;)

I am not a fan of F5000 (actually I haven`t heard much about it yet) but any new GPL mod is a good addition to GPL.
And like with any GPL mod I learn a lot of these old race series like I probably wouldn`t know much without GPL.

I know the team is very busy with other projects, but maybe it would help to develop a full F5000 mod when you have access to a F5000 private section at GPLrepository where the mod guys can help you. And maybe they find time to do some work on F5000 besides their other projects.
You could try to contact Ginetto if he would please crate a private F5000 section at GPLrepository and invite you and the appropriate guys.
Well, it is just an idea, but we have to start somewhere to get a full mod maybe one day. :)

Keep in mind we need GEM+ to make a working mod.

Hi Steffan.  Thanks for the reply and the suggestion.  A new section at the GPL Repository might drum up some interest in a F5000 mod.  However, when I tried to create an account there I couldn't get past the verification captcha.  I  tried about a dozen times to create an account but wasn't able to.  I don't know if it was a glitch or I just couldn't read the captcha.  Oh well.

Formula 5000 was much loved and pretty popular in certain locales during the late 1960's and 1970's--especially Australia/New Zealand, the UK and the US and Canada.  The cars were run in other places but not as stand-alone series.  They were somewhat competitive with F1 cars in the mixed races in which they both competed and for awhile the track record at Watkins Glen was held by a F5000 car.

F5000 will be great.
I took the Advanced Trainers from the Thundercars. Nobody could tell me the power of these cars, but i was very pleasured about the feeling to drive.
Maybe there will be a short and dirt way to combinite them?

Think F1 chassis with big block American V8 engines.  Tons of torque over a near flat curve, and a glorious sound.  Mario Andretti, the Unsers, Brian Redman, nearly everyone in open wheel or sport cars competed at some point.  Sadly the series died out in the seventies.

I'll leave that question for the mod designers as they're the experts in that area.  My interests are in painting cars and graphically updating some older tracks upon which these Formula 5000/A cars actually raced.

Here's a carset I've been working on.  It's a 1969 Formula A(5000) "SCCA Nationals" carset.  Apart from the US SCCA (later L&M) Continental Series, many Formula A drivers competed in SCCA national and regional events at some of America's great classic and "lost" road racing tracks.  Think Meadowdale, Mid-America Raceway, Ponca City, Bryar, Continental Divide, Blackhawk Farms, etc., along with places like Riverside, Willow Springs, Marlboro, VIR, Seattle, Lime Rock, Road America and others.  Unlike the Continental Series, the fields were usually composed of Formula A, Formula B and Formula C cars, with typically only a handful of Formula A cars competing at any one race.  It was a massive schedule and  there were a lot of different winners.   http://www.igleize.fr/gp/sc5mod.htm

This set is a collection of the cars/drivers that competed in those races in 1969.  I'm also working on SCCA Continental Series carsets for 1969 and 1970.

Yes, I think I need to learn how to package up a carset, but I haven't used GEM except to install the various mods.  I still do my editing in separate GPL installs, using car models from various mods and carsets, so it makes it hard for me  to incorporate that into a GEM-compatible package.  I haven't figured out how to do that yet.
