For a couple of days I got "access denied" messages there, for the past two days it's "Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at www.nogripracing.com".

While not my favorite race sim site I hope they've not gone the way of RSC.

getting "connection timed out" today

(My only issue with them is best expressed by the fact they have more banned members than any dozen other sites of my acquaintance.  I'm surprised I'm still a member, lol.)

Same here, :( I wonder if it has anything to do with this GDPR thingy, Perhaps they haven't updated their policy settings and fell foul of some EU ruling? (Just thinking outloud).

I cannot connect either.
My guess is that NoGrip and all the enclosed good info and stuff is gone for good :-( :-(

ByTheWay: jgf I really need your assistance in this NR4 vs NR2003 discussion.
As I recall faintly some of my info about the succession and dev of the two sims I have from some insight from you:-)

I suspect a complete server failure;  could take several days to get a replacement, get it configured and running, copy all the data from backups, test everything, and get back online.

Basically, Nascar Racing 1, 2, and 3 were a continous line of development; the virtually forgotten Nascar Legends was built on the NR3 engine.  Nascar Racing 4 was built on the GPL engine, and as such is a standalone in the progression of Sierra Nascar sims.  Nascar Racing 2002 was completely new from the ground up, though based on experience from GPL/NR4;  NR2003 was an update of NR2002.  A successor to NR2003 was in development when Vivendi acquired Sierra, dissent over the direction of this sim (Kaemmer wanted even more realism, Vivendi ordered a more arcade racer to appeal to a wider audience) led to Kaemmer's departure.  The rest, as they say, is history.

An interesting read on the history of Sierra/Papyrus, along with comments by Kaemmer, is here:

That's too quick a response. Considering nogrip doesn't exist to make money. Also highly unlikely, I'd go with a server down or hosting fees not paid or simply closed.

They are highly sponsored.  That's one reason for their draconian forum policies, they don't want anything that may offend those sponsors.

There is a difference between sponsorship and and using a free service to sell the users data. Anyway I know next to nothing about the GPPDSR to be certain, but I recall there is a grace period build in at least by bureaucratic inertia.

Yeah I know that article. But eventhough the guy has great knowledge about the Papyrus history then he is downplaying the dev gap (IMO) between the GPL/NR4 code and the later NR2002/NR2003 code.
In the article he is saying:
"NASCAR Racing 2002 Season followed in 2002 and then came NASCAR Racing 2003 Season. Both featured several minor enhancements" (against the NR4 engine).

Unable to connect to no grip too, on my browser.

I tried this https://archive.org/index.php
To maybe get a contact, for the site,so we could find out whats going on.
But it seems to be confusing,to me 🤔 when putting in HTTPS://nogripracing.com
Nothing seems to come up.
Maybe some of you can try and have more success?

I sincerely hope and pray, that nogrip as not gone. Just the same way as Black hole Motorsports did.

Is it another nail, in the coffin, for pc gaming and simracing. Favouring more, console gaming and the rise in online gaming, for those type of game machines?

TP 🤔😁

To elaborate, GPL was originally intended for a spring or summer '99 release, but Sierra insisted it be released in time for Christmas '98.  So it was rushed out as it existed in September '98 and what you got was essentially a late stage beta, minus the proposed career mode, weather options, etc. (hence the unpolished trainers, no rain at Mosport, some setup anomalies).  And so it acquired the reputation for an extremely steep learning curve and, for its day, steep system requirements;  becoming a classic "niche" game, and selling poorly compared to contemporary sims.  Nascar Racing 4 was, for all practical purposes, a "proof of concept" project;  Papyrus knew they had a good physics/tire engine with good graphics capability, and a Nascar sim would attract more interest than historic F1, thus NR4 was born.  The next step was a dedicated Nascar sim based on what they had learned from GPL/NR4, but built from scratch.  So NR4 remains a standalone sim, with no direct relation to the N1/2/3 series nor the NR2002/2003 series, beyond being a line of work from the same team.

BTW, still getting "connection timed out" at nogrip.

I guess some of you have already found this, but for the others - there is an explanation (sort of) about nogrip at RaceDepartment forums. Doesn't sound very optimistic though.

I assume this is your reference - https://www.racedepa...om-gone.152099/

which ends with an unknown person stating nogrip's server contract expired.  If that is the case it's just a matter of them finding a new home ...unless they are out of funds.  Time will tell.

Still getting "connection timed out".

FWIW, a little snooping (Accessify and Whois sites) reveals little about nogripracing.  It changed ownership in Feb. 2014 and "public access to Nogripracing ownership data is restricted due to privacy matters";  previous owner was Eamonn O'Doherty.  Domain is registered through GoDaddy to "Registration Private Domains By Proxy, LLC" and doesn't expire til Jan 2019.  Since June 2015 they have been hosted by OVH SAS in France.

Yes, it is. I didn't post a link because I wasn't sure if it would be considered spam.
